Looking for a good set of riding pants. I'm looking for overpants not just riding jeans. Would like them to be usable in the summer and in the winter with addtional layers under. Waterproof would be awesome. However the protection is the most important thing. OH and the more INEXPENSIVE the better. Anyone got any good suggestions and on a somewhat related note for future ideas does anyone know the abrasion resistance of some of these duck bill workpants such as carhartts. As in could they stand up to a good slide?

Bluesmudge

Carhartts will not do much if you slide going 20mph+
Thick cotton is still cotton. Plus no impact protection.

I don't have any suggestions because I'm still in the market for a decent pair of pants, but if you want cheap, check out fieldsheer's stuff. Usually the cheapest and I crashed in their stuff no problem.

Ya I knew no impact protection form the carhartts I was thinking of some slight modifications to them. In reality I figured they wouldn't have much in the way of abrasion resistance but I was hoping for the best I suppose. Oh well to continue on the search.

I got a pair of these

and they seem pretty good so far and were not too bad on price, but I'm a n00b at this point anyway, so take that for what it's worth.  But they have a zip out liner and full length side zippers.  They can zip down from the top which means you can open a little space to get some air in during the summer.

I like my Suzuki riding pants. I got them off Ebay last year for $35 which was a steal. They have hip and knee protection and are waterproof. They are textile and are a little warm down here in Florida but very nice right now. They also have a mesh liner so it doesn't stick to you. It also has the back zipper that goes into my GXAir Jacket perfectly that keeps the back down.

Unfortunately, I haven't really seen these particular pants anywhere else.

I got a pair of the HT Air Overpants 2.0.

Not cheap, but you can find them for ~$150.

They're nice because in the summer, they are mesh so going over some shorts you'll get protection and the wind.

In winter, you zip in the liner to make them windproof.  The full side zipper is very convienent.  I do feel like and sound like I'm wearing snow-pants when I have jeans, the liner and the overpant on, but alas...I'm warm.  :thumb: (I could even put on some thermals for extra warmth)

I also highly recommend using the CE armor.  Saved my knee recently.

I've been extremely happy with my Scorpion Deuce pants. Very comfortable in the summer with the liner out, and waterproof & windproof with the liner in. I wear some polypro long underwear under the liner and have been toasty warm and dry if crazy wind and rain in 39 deg. weather so far this winter. Don't look dorky either (IMO)

I have Joe Rocket Alter Ego pants. They are comfortable and have a big zippered panel you can take off to reveal mesh. They also have a waterproof liner and CE knee armor, which is also good.

Seems like a good price and description sounds like good pants, but have never heard of this company, probably Chinese stuff. When I have looked for pants on several occasions over the years I was not happy with the cheap stuff in stores, but that's me.

What I usually do is go try stuff on in a store if possible, then search the net for a better price. I have a pair of Joe Rockets that were my hubby's that will be offered for about $50. when I get the pics posted, but they are a warm pant (too warm for SoCal summers) and have patches on the inside of the leg where the exhaust rubbed. The waterproof, zip out liner, mesh vent, CE armor pants are the best way to go. You get them sized to fit over pants, then wear shorts under if it's hot and summer, jeans or whatever if it's cold in the winter.

Anything with armor is better than denim or the like.   ;)
