im in the process of putting a v8 and transmission into a 1988 rx7 vert. ( convertible) now im going to be selling off the rotary drivetrain, from the oil cooler to hte engine, intake etc trans, and driveshaft to the rear end. ( keeping rear end to re-use. should i disassemble the engine? or strip to short block  sell off pumps accessories, etc. reason being to use the fundage from the sales of engine parts and stuff to obtain the kit from grannys speed shop. ( to partially offest the cost anyways. anyhoo pics, and opinions please, i cannot jsutify theexpense involved in overhauling., a substantial amount in injectors alone. almost as much as teh mounting kit lol  , anyhoo the pics

I can't remember form the other thread but in what state of repair is the engine, aka good compression?, cause if it had bad injectors for long and was running lean that can kill a rotary quick.

bad injectors since day one. ive only had it on raod for approximately 14 miles, at which point i tested teh block., and discovered teh bad water seals. at which point im thinkin v6/v8 transplant. about a week later i traded my gs for the truck, the jet ski, and a pc ( nice one) and 400 in cash. so the truck will be the donor. i promised its body to a friend of mine if he pulls the drivetrain out. i drop truck off to him, i come back later pick up engine/trans, and drop of trucks title

and pretty good compression, averaging 80 on each plug hole, , but water ingestion could have been fidging with that. BUT engien ran good, , but for the injectors, acting up, and the water seals gone

Just my $0.20,

I'd sell your buddy the entire truck, engine and all.  Or, do some sort of sale with it, not just the body.

I've adapted things to run with a V8, and it's never as simple as it turns out to be.  Ever.
Just a little friendly advice, because you seem cool:  seriously don't waste your time.

Engine mounts
radiator clearances
firewall clearances
new driveshaft
new tranny shifter set-up
beefed up cooling fans
new fuel pump to get the correct feed at WOT, possibly
wiring harness conversion
new computer, but you're probably wanting to keep the one in the truck
custom yoke for the rear end

I've done it before, twice, in vehicles with much more underhood space than an RX6.  It's just not worth the time and effort.  It ends up costing WAY more than you initially plan.   I am really good at justifying my actions, but I ended up hating myself for wasting so many resources.
Besides, rotaries are so much cooler!!!!  Why wouldn't you want to keep it?

natedawg120

Ehh its actually cheaper to transplant a v8 in an rx7 than rebuild or replace the engine.  A guy across the way has a supercharged 351 in his, its weird cause you hear it and expect something somewhat ... different

The only challenge comes when you explode the rear end and want to get creative with the replacement  :thumb:

i would say the engine is worth around 300-400 because the seals probably need replaced, esp if it came that way, and that's a Buddha Loves You  :o

Tear the engine apart.  It's worthless as an assembly.

S4 intake tracts are worthless in general...I'd put the lot of it on eBay as one shot...accordians, TB, upper/mid/lower manifolds, sensors, everything.

^However, the oil injectors are a big thing for being small things...$20 for all four a few years back.

Rats nest is worthless but put the lot as one thing, start the bid at $.01.

Rotor housings, divider plates, and rotors are always a big thing because people need good housings...sell them all individually.

People like buying the pulleys as sets.

The oil coolers are BIG THINGS!  FC RX-7s have the best out-of-the-box oil coolers and you should keep that in mind for future projects.  I keep two around "just in case"...one's going to be on the bimmer before long.

Oil cooler LINES are also big...for such good coolers, the lines were put in a crappy place that catches a shaZam! load of road wear.  If they didn't leak they will sell...but keep the above in mind.  If you use the cooler, you'll need the fittings from the lines.

E-shaft is a good sell but hit and miss...I couldn't hardly get them to sell, but when they did they were high dollar.

Save the motor mounts...they sometimes come in handy for conversions.  You can sell them later, but odds are they won't fetch much.

Auto trannies are shaZam!...you can't give them away...but if you got a 5spd it's an easy $100~150 but I don't think verts came with manny trannys.

5-spd drive shafts sell, auto's don't catch much.

I think that's all that really concerns the engine/tranny.

yamahonkawazuki

from what i understood, in 88 the vert was manny only. but hell today the truck is totalled, due to elderly womans carelessness. hell mak you know what thread im talkin about. got pics of it as well. so her insurance will decide the fate of my truck, i will be owed transportation, they will pay for it. AND they will also pay for teh rx7 block in the bed, /or a replacement engine and transmission froma breaker, i jsu got out of er, from pain and stuffness. lol 3 hours there and got 15 hyrdocodone to akte home and muscle relaxers. so work shall be fun

shaZam! dude...those guys have no idea what that engine was.  Make them get you a new one from Mazda haha

natedawg120

man i didn't realize the engine was in the truck during the accident.  I hope everything works out, hell if they will replace the engine you could spend a little on a turbo set up for it and have a nice 7.

i am tempted by this as well, and forgo teh rebuild and get a crate. if not, ill egt the kit from a company called grannys speed shop, and get teh engine trans from a breakers/junkyard

Big blocks really don't work very well...but I wouldn't have gone with a 305.  350 or 351 for old-school.  LT1 with a T56 is the best.

shiznizbiz

f%$k it, drop a 502 in it...beastly comes to mind.  wieght distrubution of 65/35 also comes to mind.  lol.  and outrageous head aches while building.

Those big engines can do pretty good if tuned and operated sanely.  I know of at least one 454-powered Pontiac Fiero that averages in the mid 20's when he's not racing it.
