I am getting ready to purchase break and turns for my buell X1 tail conversion and I found this break light I like on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Motorcycle-Parts-Accessories__94-07-Buell-S1-X1-M2-Blast-LED-Signal-Tail-Lights-Smoke_W0QQitemZ220322302158QQadiZ2863QQadnZMotorcycleQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item220322302158&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A543%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

My problem is that in the description it says that its not DOT approved? Is that just to cover his tail or are these really not street legal?????

Thanks,

Nicki

That is a pretty cool looking brake light. Even though the brake light is not DOT approved, I doubt you will get pulled over.

As long as your brake light works I don't think you will get hassled about the brake light.

My thought was he was covering his own ass if you took off your turn signals and got pulled over?  I would use it in conjunction with the turns?  Any ideas on legal issues?

Thanks,

Nick

In NC you would fail inspection. Prolly wont get ticketed if you got a inspection done with stock, then went to this.

If it's not DOT approved, it's not legal.  I doubt you'd get pulled over for that alone, but that doesn't make it a good idea; those aftermarket integrated signals are a good way to confuse easily confused cagers.  I'd stick with regular turn signals for the sake of a) staying safer and b) not attracting undue attention from the police.

On the subject of b - I've found a good rule to be 'one crime at a time,' so if you think you ever might end up, say, speeding a little, having a legal-looking bike increases the chance that the cop gives you a pass. ;)  On the flipside, if a cop does pull you over, having illegal lighting is just something else for him/her to write up a ticket for while you're there.

Ive heard some of those led clear tais arent as bright.

I have an aftermarket integrated rear light on my gixxer and i don't like it.  The brake light is plenty bright but when you turn the signals on and hit the brakes it would be easy not to notice the change in the brake light from dim to bright, thats what bothers me - i have a phobia of being a bug on some dumb pricks grill ...

Yeah... When I've got like a semi truck or whatever tailgaiting... its nice to know that you at least have a visible brake light.

I would keep the stock turns on in addition to this brake light but maybe its a better option to just stick with a non integrated since I won't need the turn signals to be in the break light.

you wont get hassled unless 1 the cop is an ass. or 2 you piss him off BADLY , only way honestly youd get caught, is if he or she pulled out teh proverbial fine toothed comb :police:

I might have found a set of 4 stock buell smoked tails on ebay that I'm going to bid on, so this plan might be on hold if I can locate a stock buell brake light.

Thanks for all the input guys!
