Ya.  I was aware of signal generators, just never had one fail me, yet.  Points and condensors could be a royal PIA too, but easy to replace.

My 75 Mustang II V-8 had electronic ignition and the module failed, very expensive at the time so I went to the junk yard and got a complete distributor with points for $10-15 and put it in and went back to non electronic ignition and it worked out good.  I grew up with points.

My 82 Escort when brand new acted the same way the Mustang did and the same as sotomoto's GS and it turned out to be the pick up that time.  Ford had a bunch of bad ones.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.
