Continually blowing fuse- HELP?

Goodaye!
My son has a GS500F 2005 model. It has 35000  km on clock. My eldest son bought new and sold on last year to my youngest. He had a low speed lowside about 6 months ago whilst on a dirt road.
Since then, bike has regularly blown the fuse. Started ocassionally when he'd done a 1/2-1 hour ride or so, stopped bike and then if restarted while hot- the fuse would blow-. After bike cooled (say after work/uni?) no problems- just start and ride home.
Lately, it's getting worse. This past week was first time it has happened while he was actually riding the bike (twice- a fairly scarey thing when all lights etc go off too!)
We looked over bike for any loose/damaged wires. Took the starter solinoid out, cleaned all the bits (without actually pulling it apart- a few small rocks came out!), put all together, ran bike in garage- stopped after 10 minutes 3 times and restarted- Started each time. Went to ride around block- made it only to the street! New fuse, started bike, broke fuse when he got on and revved!
I was thinking it might be the solinoid itself I(mechanic does not think so) but whole unit $130 and if that's not it, bit expensive.
Anyone else had anything similar? Any suggestions?
PS I realise that this is my first post- sorry if that's wrong 'etiquitte'- Just a 'dad' wanting to get his son's bike back on the road.
Thanks
Jeff

check your brake light (at the bars) wires, and your clutch interrupt wires. if they short like mine did last week, you'll blow 5-10 fuses trying to find the short.

there is a way to make a self-resetting 20 amp breaker help you find the fault:

temporarily wire a 20 amp , self-resetting circuit breaker where your 20 amp fuse would go. get a compass, yes, a cheap compass, and start the bike. move the compass CLOSELY to all the wires, and look for the needle to swing wildly. This is where your short will be.

if you need to rev the bike to duplicate it, go ahead. worst it will do is stumble for the nanosecond it takes for the breaker to reset.

after you find/fix the short, replace that breaker with the proper 20amp fuse. ride on.

(there are a million links on how to do this in googles cache, but i'm about to go to the hugely sucky place called work)

No, crash on the right side. I did read heaps of threads after searching for' fuse' in the topic- found loads of references to 'goats'- Still none the wiser.
We are going to do a cable search today. Wish us luck

After reading many of this forum's posts, I decided we needed to get the fairings off and start checking wires, It wasn't long before I spotted some wires sitting just above the metal (rec tifier??) above the cylinder head on right side. Even with glasses on I couldn't tell if there were any exposed wires- asked the son to check- found that 2 were slightly melted in a very small spot. These, when traced back to origine, came from the starter switch. Also, found another on a separate wire line also exposed very slightly. Tapwed 'em up, zip tied the whole lot up a bit higher and away from heat source and tiried starting. Started- ran for a while, turned off- started each time, ran around block- stopping each time at home- no problems. Just been on a 2 hour ride, stopping and starting a few times :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
So, thanks GS forum for a little info to this thread, but , after a lot of searching, a lot of info from previous threads.  Go the mighty GS :star:

Sounds good!

I had a short in my headlight circuit early this winter.  Nothing like riding down the road and having the headlights go out! :o
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?
