I know the 2001+ tanks hold 5.3 gallons with a 1 gallon reserve.

I also read that Suzuki recommends only filling to the bottom of the filler neck.

When I fill up while holding the bike level it is possible to rock the bike and add a little more fuel.

I also read "By the time you're at the filler neck, each extra 1mm is more than a pint of fuel."

So I am wondering if there is any way to tell when I have exactly 5.3 gallons in my tank while filling it?

I dont think rocking the bike will get you anymore room for gas.  altho if your bike is running and you wait long enough you can put 20 gallons in it. :woohoo: lol

Run it dry.  Push to gas station.  Put in 5.3 gallons.  (I read somewhere that pumps in USA are not temperature compensating, so the actual mass will depend on what the temperature of the fuel is.)

somebody with an empty tank should put 5.3 gallons in and tell me where the level is, we would be friends x 1000

Yes, but nearly every gas station I've ever been to has underground gas tanks, where the temperature is very constant. Unless you live very near one of the poles, the ground temperature remains fairly constant once you get a few feet below ground. Since the pump draws pretty directly from the underground tank, there just isn't that much temperature variation. Winter and summer blends of gas will screw up gas mileage, but that has to do with ethanol content, not temperature...
