I passed my test :D but on that note i went out on my gs and she is a bit spluttery till about 4000rpm, then all of a sudden she kicks and wooomph shes off, im slightly confused about it, any advice would be appreciated.

ohgood

crap gas. it always strikes when things are going good.

dump the tank, bowls, and get some new stuff. maybe it will flush out the crap (hint is here) that's clogging  your idler jets. :)

I had this same issue after my GS sat for about a year. Just run it through a tank or two. It was fine for me.

Maybe old gas, but don't make up your mind until the bike is nice and hot. (20 minutes or more)  Since Glasgow is a stone's throw from the North Pole and the GS is cold-blooded and doesn't run well until it's warm unless you keep the choke on a little.

Congrats on passing your test!  :woohoo:

i dont think it is old petrol cause its been run every other day just so it didnt gum up, iv started her run her for about 20 mins then shut her off, then i filled her up yest, oh and thanks for the congrats guys much appreciated :D im a happy camper now. she sounds amazing with her stainless exhaust, like a really low growl.

Ran it for 20 mins without riding? WEre you playing with the throttle, reving it up and goosing it or just idleing? The reason I ask Is because "the GS is air cooled, meaning you have to have air moving over the engine to cool it. "

Normally this is very true, but not in Glasgow in March! (or in Buffalo for that matter)  I rode today for 10 miles and the engine still wasn't warm enough to run without a little choke. (37 degrees)  The GS is a cold-blooded bee-otch and I've learned over the past year that when the temp is below 40 or so, for all intents and purposes it never warms-up!

So, if it runs crappy at low rpm in cold weather it's nothing to be concerned about.  Keep the choke on just a tad.  For this bike, it's normal.

How much riding have YOU done in Glasgow this month Bill?  :D  Do you think its some kind of perma-frost ridden sub-artic wilderness? It was 3degC this morning when I went out, thats about 36-37degF and I didnt have any problems warming up. It took the usual 3-4 mins before I could shut the choke off and I certainly didnt need to leave it partialy on for the whole 20min 12mile journey to work.

If your bike doesnt warm up at 40F and you still need to run with choke I would suggest its YOU thats got the problem  :D

platinum_black

in that case i must be the problem then :(

I've ridden to work as low as 17 degrees F ( -8 C) here in the frozen tundra of southern Chester County, PA.  She does take a bit longer to warm up, but once I hit the road, she gets plenty warm and does not require any additional choke to idle or run nicely.  BTW, I use the motor as my hand warmer at long stoplights - does a right nice job of it, so I know she stays warm enough.

Keep warm...

I had similar problems running RC car engines in connecticut, they never warm up. My solution was to wrap some aluminum foil over a portion of the cooling fins, this let it warm up quite nicely.

fred

If you're running your bike with the choke on all the time, doesn't that potentially prevent it from warming up all the way? If you're running too rich, you'll have unburnt fuel after combustion that will vaporize and cool the cylinder down. When the engine is running more lean, it is also warmer, right? Isn't that why an excessively lean mixture is a really bad thing? It seems like if you want to get your bike to warm up, you should get it off the choke as soon as possible...
