purpose of the hose near battery

Quick question, what is the purpose of the hose that is on the positive side of the battery?

bobthebiker

Its a breather for the battery so it doesnt build too much pressure and explode giving you a sulfuric acid enema.

How does it work? cause its just in the open beside the battery...

Madbones

Its should be pushed onto the drain on the side of the battery and then it runs down near the foot pegs.

Its there so that when the battery does over flow you dont get acid up your arse and all over your frame and everything else there, causing the whole lot of them to corrode quicker than that poor little snail you used to pour salt on as a kid....

The battery "breathes" through it's hole and doesn't give a rat's ar$e if there's a tube or not.

I see how the hose is routed down towards the pegs but I dont understand how it actually works... theres no "drain" on my battery to insert the hose anywhere...

I've been trying to figure this out using:

Is it just my battery? lol.. wth... it just seems like a random hose sticking out that you cant insert anywhere..

Can you "open" your battery? I.e. do you have 6 little plugs on top and if you pull them off you can see the acid and lead plates?
If not you might have a maintenance free one, which does not have a ventilation opening.
Also check other side, as some batteries have the opening on the left, other have it on the right!

OEM battery looks like this: http://alpha-sports.com/spst/1999%20GS500E/02.htm with (4) being the hose in question.

if you don't see an opening on the negative side of the battery (on the left looking from the rear towards the front) then you probably have a sealed battery instead of an OEM one.  It's not a big deal and you can pull the drain tube or leave it there in case you get a non-sealed battery next time.  I'd leave it there if it was me.

Yeah, man, that is a breather hose like everyone else is saying. My aftermarket battery actually has the hose attachment on the other side so I rerouted the hose to the appropriate side. Pretty cool if you have a sealed battery that doesn't require the breather hose. I didn't know they made those...    :thumb:

@theGrinch : I do have the 6 yellow knobes.... but I took the battery out and I am 100% there is no where to put this hose lol...

@tripleb: so there are batteries that are completely sealed? I think that may be the case for me... I guess my question would be if it matters or not that it is sealed or not... in my case the hose does nothing... i start to question things especially open ended tubes that go no where  :cookoo:

theGrinch

That is weird! If you have the knobs you're battery isn't completely sealed - but if you checked everywhere and don't have a place to connect the hose...

That hose isn't essential to running the bike, just check every so often that your frame isn't rusting away underneath your botty :thumb:

For those of us that have the Wally World battery with the breather nipple on the (-) terminal side, make sure the tube is routed away from the chain.

If you have a traditional lead-acid battery it will look something like the one in the pic. The part the breather tube pushes onto is circled, its possible you might not be able to see it if the battery is sill in the bike and you are looking down on it.

Ohhhh, admittedly I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I wasn't following this thread until the picture. My tube is just laying in the battery compartment and I figured it somehow allowed the battery to "breathe"...which now seems completely stupid as I type it.

When I look down at the battery I never noticed that fitting either...
