oil change problems!

Ok so ive got an 89 gs500. still runs good and accelerates up to 90-95 with little effort. I just got done giveing it an oil change and now its struggeling to hit 70! i put 2 quarts of 10w-40 and about half a quart of lucas oil. Can someone help me figure out whats goin on?

Did you change oil filter also?  After you changed everything did you warm up the bike on the centerstand and check oil level?

Suzuki say 3.1 US qts after an oil and filter change, the fact you have put 4.5 qts in wont help things.

sledge maybe a typo on your part but he only has 2.5 not 4.5 quarts?  Thats why I was suggesting he check the level.

What's the general feeling on this board about oil additives?

I don't use 'em.  Maybe the Lucas is helping your clutch to slip a bit at high load? Wouldn't take much slippage to make 90 turn into 70.  I have a 1991. Never used additives. Just tore down my engine and found little to no wear at all. Modern oil has enough good additives in it already that I don't see the need to add more.

Sounds like the Lucas stuff is giving you some clutch slip. That stuff is really intended for car engines, not bikes with wet clutches.

because the oil level is too high.

check it on the CENTER stand, after the bike has warmed, and DO NOT screw the dipstick back in when you check

10w40. so long as it does NOT say "friction modifiers" on the jug it's fine to use.

awwwww cupcakes sound good. thanks for all the help guys. the oil level is good but ive talked to a couple people around home and they agree that the glob of lucas oil might be slowing it down. the stuffs thicker than honey. and yes i did change the oil filter and let the bike warm up first

Yeah, that Lucas stuff sure is thick as honey, not for bikes.  Bikes don't need motor honey unless they're on their last legs, then it'll still interfere with the clutch.  Get that Lucas stuff outta there.

On the recommendation of several members here, I used Rotella 15W-40 when I changed my oil in April.  It shifts silky-smooth and runs great.

I hope your initial post was in error. 2-1/2 quarts is 3/4 of a quart too little.

Just watch your tac, If it indicates your doing 90mph ( normal 90mph rpms ) and you're only doing 70 by the speedometer,  then you know your clutch is slipping.
