A rod bearing on my 1980 GS400 blew, and thus I need new engine parts.. At the very least I need a crankshaft, and connecting rods. If possible, I'd also like to get pistons and the cylinder jug but they arn't essential. They'd just boost my CC to 500 :)

The GS500 crank and rods havn't changed since the 400 days apparently, so they should all fit and work.

Located in Enderby, British Columbia. Postal code V0E1V0, to calculate shipping.

Cheers :)

I have a bashed journal on one crank, and I believe it has over heated in that area (which is common with the rod bearing problem really) but over heating does not affect it.

It will have to be welded, precision ground back to stock and fitted back in with new bearings. You cannot do it by hand, its all to be done in a engine shop with a crankshaft polishing machine. I am posting this not to sell you my crank, but to let you know before you buy a bashed crank. I can do that too, but no idea of cost. I live in Nascar country though so bound to be cheaper than elsewhere. Upper end parts you should be able to find from people here. Heads and cyls etc are not that hard to find. I have 2 heads in the machine shop right now. 3 angle and deck on them.

OK so if you want it I'll gladly take 20 bucks and shipping for the thing. I may have 1 good rod, but the rod out of this journal is bad.

Cool.

Thanks for the offer and advice, but my crank is in the same boat. The journal is all scratched and out of spec, and I'd rather not buy one that's the exact same. :(

I have a nice cylinder and one new never used piston.  If they'll work for you make me an offer (a low one...I want this stuff out of my garage  :D) if you're interested.  Here's some photos.

My 90 GS500E has spread itself across the nation.

You can fix it. May be somehting you may have to do, motors die and there has been a rash of it recently. Good motors are hard to come by.

i've got a whole motor that was pulled because the guy ran it out of oil and it was making a funny noise. It has all the parts you could possibly need, but I have no idea what their condition is

Where abouts are you located?

South Dakota or Minnesota

Also, FWIW, my first bike was a '78 GS400

Hmm that's a little far to just go and pick up, heh.

I've also just run into money problems and won't be tinkering with this for awhile.

This is my first bike as well. Picked it up for $450, and put another $1200 into it before the engine blew. :(

very sad....

you know what I'd do if you want to put a new engine in the 400? I don't know if it's possible, but it should be. Put the head off the 400 onto a 500 engine. That's the only external difference between the motors...

The Buddha

Oh wait a sec - you want a 400 or 450 motor ? Junkyard has one - pretty sure it only needs top end ... I can check.
But this gotta be shipped from NC ... north carolina ...
Cool.

A 1980+ 400, or any 450 or 500 motor would work. My head should fit on the 500.

Lemme know about that engine from NC, Buddha!

bobthebiker

I've got a set of 500 pistons here, dont think they've got rings, but they're in good shape.  $20 for the pair + shipping?
looking for a new vehicle again.

If I get down to the junkyard this weekend - I'll get back to you. Else it may be next week - oh wait - they may be closed this weekend on account of the 4th.
Maybe next week anyway.
