Hello all,

I just bought a 1991 22k miles,about 2 weeks ago and have spent a good couple of hours here and on the www researching for my little project.
Got the bike for a great price and in 2 weeks it has taken a big transformation.
I junkyarded a sweet solo tail section and taillight and am currently hacking the heck out of the subframe.
It has drag bars on it and on the way are a set of forks with gold valves and springs along with a 08 front master cyl and caliper.
Between those will be a SS line.

Out back I plan on a Kat shock, and I am trying to figure out how I am going to mount up freebie R6 rearsets I got from a buddy.

the R6 has also provided me with a titanium midpipe and muffler from Akropovich, it was smashed and is now cut down to get rid of the smash. shorter than original but still looks normal. I have a peice of 2" tubing I plan to connect from right where the pipes go 2-1 then 2" all the way through the can.

engine wise it will have a lunchbox K&N (waiting on the brown truck) and jetted of course.
that is where I will need help though. I am in Denver co at about 6k where I live and ride and was looking for help with jetting for the above setup.

other things will be bar end mirrors, round 3" and more than likely buell turn signals.

I will try and get good pics as I go and look for some peices for sale from the stocker seat plastic and grab handle etc....

of all the great bikes I have had (performance or function) this one is turning out to be the most fun so far. :D

My wife said she didnt want me to spend a bunch of money on a bike and it looks like I will be able to do all this and keep her happy.

worst part is that insurance is gonna be pricey. Almost at the price of what I bought the bike for every year.

thanks again Gents and any help with the jetting will be great, everything I see appears to be for sea level or really close to it.

Welcome.  I am fairly new here too and this place sucks you in.  Our little GS's are quite addictive.  First thing to do is to read and then read more, lol. 

You may think that the bike is cheap, but if you are like any of us then you will change a lot of things.

How about some pictures? I have a solo tail on my bike as well, it was from a 99 R1, looks a ton better than stock. Anyway, I'll look forwarding to seeing what you've got. Let us know how the rearsets go too. Some people here have gotten some F2/F3 rearsets to go on without too much trouble.

Welcome to the forum.  Congrats on the new bike.  You will find that costomizing her will become obsesive.  Don't fight the urge.  Resistance is futile.

BTW,  Your insurance will cost as much as the bike each year???  That doesn't sound right.  I'd shop around for the best plan for you.  Depending on your situation you can get coverage for about $10 - $20 per month and many pay less then that.

you picked up on that, good job.

I said it will cost almost as much as the bike for one year of insurance.
Actually it works out to be every 15.31 months I will "buy" the bike again.

worked on the subframe last night and have everything tack welded in place and it fits good with the tail. drilled and tapped holes for mounting the tail,
took pictures to update last night but was too tired (past midnight when I drug myself into the house)
next will be finishing welding the rear, then grind smooth. taillight tabs and then rearsets to be folowed by exhaust.
by then my forks and air filter will be here. Still gotta get my shock ordered.
Man this thing is gonna be cool.
I know worthless w/o pics but I will get them up soon, promise.

I pay more for insurance each year than I paid for my 89, and I only pay 107 a year.  and yes, this bike is fun stock, but a blast after being modified!  and we dont believe anything that we cant see in picture form!

As promised, it was another late night in the garage and work has been busy today but here are the pics.

Her name is Prain. Prev owner and friends named it "Purple Rain" she wont be purple anymore but Prain is her new name.

the stock seat cut right behind the mounting holes.
still needs to be trimmed on the side to match the lines of the seat pan but trying to get it roadworthy and improved looks.
I have a bet going with a buddy that I cant have it "done" by the end of the month. hes gonna lose as I have only had it 2 weeks today  :flipoff:



Mock up of exhaust, whadya think of the angle? (ignore the hanger it will angle back, just all I had for measuring)
also the R6 peg isnt permanent yet, mocked for exhaust but it looks like I can make it work.I figure if it is too hot then I will just wrap the pipe right there.




So there is the proof, any color suggestions?
thinkin red with 2 white stripes down the center (3/4" wide), white wheels red side panels with white lettering.
Black frame,fork lowers and swingarm.
that may come during the winter

I'd go with wider (than 3/4") dual stripes - I really like the ones on a good Shelby cobra.
But that's my taste.

Well, when given the choice of bike color I chose Black. So my suggestion is... of course... black  :icon_mrgreen:

But just so you know... red won't make it go faster  :whisper:

with your exhaust there, where is your heel going to go?

I use my foot for a temperature gauge :icon_mrgreen:


The bike looks good, id line the back of the muffler with the rear of the tail or tire, ie less angle

I think the pipe should match the angle of the tail/subframe. It looks ridiculous right now, no offense. I like what you are doing, keep it up!

Looks really good. The angle doesn't bug me, but I think I'd angle it down slightly as well. I don't know if the tail looks aggressive enough to go with an exhaust at the angle. Also, if you lessen the angle it'll give you a little space for your heel as well. Otherwise I really like it. I wish I had the ability to weld, it would make tail swaps so much easier!
