I've been trying to swap in a Kat FE for a couple weeks now.  I can't seem to get the steering stem issue sorted out.  I have a pile of awesome parts and nothing to bolt them to.  It's gotten to the point that I've been riding my wife's moped to work...and it's getting a little rediculous.  Here's where I've been.

Bought 97 Kat triple, which is supposedly identical to the 88-96 except that the stem is pressed and has a step to retain it, not welded.
Pressed my 90 GS stem out of my 90 GS triple.
Went to press the GS stem into the kat triple and the diameter of the stem is slightly too small.  I can push the stem up and down but it just barely touches.  (insert joke here)  It's just a fraction too small.  (again...insert joke here)

So my question is that if I get a 88-96 triple and grind off the weld, can I press (not slide) the GS stem into it and reweld it?  Is it going to be a press fit, or the same sloppy fit I have now.

thanks.

Awesome.  I'll take it.  Paypal sent.

I'm still curious to find out if anybody knows the answer.  I might as well try to make another kat triple out of this pile of parts.
