A warning to the newbs and a friendly reminder to the vets

Pulled a rookie mistake this morning.  Last night was the first time this year the temperature got fairly cold at night and I didn't take that into consideration on my morning commute.  Long story short, didn't give the tires time to heat up.  (cold tires + cold pavement) + excessive turn in speed = wreck   Rear tire lost traction in a right hand turn, started to slide, over corrected and high sided it.  Luckily my safety gear did its job and I didn't have any major injuries, just some bruises to my left side and my ego.  Unfortunately the bike didn't fair as well.  Be safe out there guys & gals and take it easy in the cold!

Glad to hear you were wearing the gear and that you're ok.

Can we get some pics of how the gear fared, as well as the bike? (Bike because I'm mean, gear because I'm curious as to what you had and how it held up.)
Dear Cancer, I hate you. You're a heart breaker and a thief. And I want you to give him back, you jerk. Sincerely, Nikki.

Go home, Joe. Sleep well, and comfortable in the lives you have changed.

Glad you are safe! I needed a reminder like this. I haven't always been wearing all my gear lately.

pandy

Ouch. Glad you're ok. How cold did it get the previous evening? Was it icy? How long were you riding on the tires before the high-side (ie how many minutes into your commute were you)?

The SV?...You wreaked the SV? Oh the horror!!!

Actually I'm glad to hear you're alright.  Are you saying you're ok or did the doctor say you're ok?  The high side I took last Memorial Day I said I was ok but when I went to the doctor a few weeks later he said I had a hairline fracture and a small bone chip.

Thanks for the concern guys, I'll be here to harass you a bit longer   :)

Porkchop- It was the SV.  The good news is I don't have to worry about scratching the tank with a tank bag     I said I'm ok, no doctor was involved (no health insurance).

Mike.Gail- I'll get some pics of it when I get a chance.  I still haven't gotten a chance to look stuff over, I still had to get to work.  I know what made the bike unrideable but I'm sure I'll find more stuff that's scratched/broken when I take a closer look.  The shift lever broke from the impact and I guess my arm caught the mirror when I went flying because it hit on the left side yet I still managed to break off the front master cylinder.  I know the radiator was hanging on the one side but I didn't see any leaks.

bluesmudge- Glad I could be of service   ;)

pandy- Don't know the official low but there was a warning to cover your vegetable gardens so I assume high 40's/low 50's, way too warm for ice.  I had just left for work, less than a mile.  Luckily it was within pushing distance.

Glad to hear the padding did the trick and you were wearing it.
Very very sad about the SV. Another angel gets its wings.
Speaking from a Canadian point of view, and I love to ride in the winter;
Tires will warm up a little.  The pavement never does.  = ride like its your first day on the bike.
Good warning at this time of the year.
Thanks on behalf of everybody that reads it.

No rush on the pics, I'd rather you take the time to make sure you're ok rather than ignore a pain because some foolbag on the internet wanted a writeup on your gear.

(Btw: Pint glass, Fill with Ice, approx 1tsp limejuice or a wedge of fresh, 2oz Tanqueray, Tonic to fill the glass. Serve under blacklight, repeat as necessary. Avoid operation of anything.)

newbs = no chicken strips and proud of the lack of them.

I like my chicken strips and I NEVER trust a cold road even if my rubber is at temp.

+1. I too am Proud of my chicken strips.

Interesting. While doing a job we needed Traffic Control. The TC boss turned up on a Bike. It was at night but I could Not see any Extrusion Nobs on his tires. I had a closer look and it looked like he'd Sandpapered his tires to give the Appearance of no nobs or chicken strips. What a tool he was.

Not necessarily. It's hard to have chicken strips when you go to the track, even for "vets."

Now Now Pandy.  Behave yourself on the streets. :nono:
The track is where you go to burn your chicken strips off.

Actually, that's what I meant: it's hard to keep your chicken strips while you're AT the track! One trip to the track = no more chicken strips.  8)

I'm very cautious on the street, as anyone who knows me knows; too much can go wrong.  :thumb:

Good tip. I never would have thought of that, and I'm planning to ride for as long as I can into the season.
