$430 to take a flight...

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/sfl-b17-flight-b091409,0,1122176.story

Start taking up a collection so I can afford to actually fly on one of these while they are still able.   Only 15 in flying condition in the world.

I saw and climbed into one about 15 years ago.   I love old aircraft, especially from that era.  Having seen one up close, I have even more respect for the guys who had the 'nads to fly missions in them.
On those days when life is a little too much and nothing seems to be going right, I pause for a moment to ponder the wise last words of my grandfather:  "I wonder where the mother bear is?"

That would be awesome, I almost flew in aluminum overcast at oshkosh last year but it was too much $.

I did go for a ride in a ford tri-motor which was really cool.

Here is some good reading if you like WWII bomber history. It is an aircrew flight log for a B17 in the european theatre.

Hey Caffeine you're in S. FLa right. If you get up here to Central Florida in Polk City they have Fantasy of Flight tons of vintage War Craft there. Worked there for a summer was Cool. Got to go in the only flying Short Sunderland (sp) what a flight. The a Ford Tri Motor (the one that was in Indiana Jones). And fell alseep in many an aircraft waiting for people to do a tour of it. Tell ya what though I'm sure the Zero they have in there is haunted well probably most are being 90% of the planes were found with the pilots still in them (or so the myth goes) Oh, and the GeeBee think that was the name is sooo beautiful. There is also a replica of the Wright Flyer in there wanna know somthing neat about that. The Smithsonion didn't keep the flight register  up with it since it is in the museum so Kermit Weeks (owner) was able to get it for the replica. so the replica can fly with that designation and the original can't. Weird! Flight Simulators there are cool to because you get to sit in the cockpit of some partial Corsairs!

I didn't remember what a Geebee was until I clicked Yama's link...yeah, they don't look like something that could even get airborne.

btw- I had to work Sunday, so I didn't get to see the B-17.   Friends of mine went, so maybe they'll send me pics.

^^^^ Awesome !!!

I watch any WWII stuff and read about these great old planes whenever I can.
What really really puts stuff in perspective is the first people that flew in them
might have been a 17 year old kid from Idaho who'd only been on a tractor
and '39 ford pick-up before.  Can you imagine going up in one at 17 or 18
and having to jump out over France or some place you cant even pronounce ??!!??

Biggie props !
The greatset generation of our time

Ive watched the stunt guys flying the Mustangs with the clipped wings and it makes me
air-sick but on the ground :icon_lol:
It crazy the stuff they do ! Just watching it twist yer gutz into knots !! :cookoo:

Kewl, would love to check it out! It was nice to get paid to learn about those awesome planes and hearing the stories those guys told were out of this world. I had never seen so many grown men cry as when they saw "their" old planes. I remember one guy was in a wheel chair  and he told me about flying his Corsair and all of the missions he had gotten the distinguished flying cross for the Navy. He had not seen a Corsair since he had downed his. He then asked me if we had one because he wanted to see his "girl" one last time before he died. I personally escorted him to the plane and he struggled out of his wheel chair to his knees and bawled rattling off the names of comrades he had lost. All in one moment I was profoundly sad (at the heartache this man still had after so many years) and proud that I live in a country that is worth fighting for.

We received a thank you letter shortly there after saying he died that week peacefully in his sleep.

God bless all who have given to our country.
