Modified brake arm or......

Hey all,

Bout done with my parts searching for the winter from hell, lol.

Stuck on a couple things, but this is bothering me the most.  I already snagged a Kat rear wheel and brake bracket.  I still need a brake arm.  Now I know you can bend the GS one.  You can cut the ears off and weld another, so on and so on.

Is a Kat or GSXR arm in any certain years able to be used?  I see a few on the bay and I want to buy one, but I want to be sure.  Seems that it would almost be easier to do that?!

FWIW Searching didn't provide much of anything other than bending, hammering, and welding the GS one.

Thanks
Jon

if you want to do some welding you could mount your brake arm under the swingarm like the post 98 kats do and run the shorter brake arm like that.  I have one if you want to go that way.

Here's what it looks like:

But that's actually a GSXR caliper.
(ok, it's a little dirtier than that now   :nono:)

Oh sure guys, make it more difficult for me.  I have soooooo much to that this would just take more time.  But hell, what is winter but 5 months.

Ok, saying I wanted to do that swap, what is needed?  I have an '05 brake bracket but what did you all do to move the other mount?  Is it a GSXR or Kat mount?  Looks pretty dang good IMO.

But, I am still seeking the golden answer about my OP.  Anyone know about that?

Thanks!

dude,
to install the kat wheel and bend the arm takes about an hour
you need tools to  remove the wheel
a hammer and a vice
the amount you bend is very little

you could also buy a piece of 1/4 AL bar stock and make one in about 30 min

this is not a 5 month project.....unless budduh works on it

Ok, WERAse answered your original question.

I don't know the year of the bracket.  Ask dgyver, since he did all the work.  I'll take pics of the welds tonight.

Is the bracket you guys are talking about the one that holds the caliper to the axle and looks like a triangle?  If so, my 90 bracket is sitting in a wheelbarrow right now.  If I remember right, it looks exactly like that and you can have it for free if you want.  I didn't know they were different between years.

My 90 GS500E has spread itself across the nation.

I know it does.  Look at my sig and see what I am doing this winter.  The Kat swap is about 2% of the total project.  I am just getting the parts rallied before hand.

As for bending the arm, I am not opposed at all.  I guess in my mind it would pull the caliper forward a bit but that really shouldn't matter.

Not really a big deal at all but I was just seeing if there was a confirmed brake arm swap out there.

I think a brake arm swap is more work than you'd need with absolutely no benefit. The Katana/GSXR wheels don't fit because the brake arm is any different. They fit because the swingarm is wider. If you replaced the GS arm with a different arm, you would still have to bend the replacement to get it around the wheel with the stock swingarm. It would work if you rewelded the mount on the swingarm, but then you'd have no reason to swap the arm anyway because you could just re-weld so the stock arm fit.

Hey Ineedanap,

Can I have that bracket for free that you were talking about, im gonna try this mod, but maybe a differant bar, (the underneath) Im gonna make like either a desinged one with curves, or lighting shape, or mill one on a metal lathe with cool stuff.

PM me if you will still give it to me for free.

Alas, finally an answer to my question.

Gracias.

Just to confuse matters even more, here's another way to do it!

That's on a GSXR, I believe, with an extended swingarm.

By the way, do you still want pics of the lower weldment on my swingarm?
