Last week, i received a 1993-94 (I think) GSXR swing arm. It's all aluminum construction and will fit a 180 rear wheel. My thought was to see if I can get it to fit with minimal work and if so, would the engine be strong enough to pull a 180 tire? From pictures I have seen of the customs that Jim Knopf built, i would say it is possible that the engine would be fine but I am curious what you all think?

I know, I know......why should I care if I am selling the bike but if I don't sell it, I might just try to fit this thing.

By the way, I did a quick measure and both swing arm pivot points measure just under 230mm. (GSXR is like 225mm, GS is very close to that. Hard to tell without removing it.)

ohgood

if the gs can handle 2up, the tire size won't hurt the engine ;)

why a wider tire ? drag racing ?

I dunno. Looks? I like that fact that the bike is nimble as is. I also like the way that the inverted forks look but if I went that route, I would end up with a wider front tire too. I know I can fit a wider tire with the stock swing arm. I also know according to Psyber, the handling is a bit different. I dunno. :dunno_white:

a bit is an understatement. I had to relearn how to ride a stocker and man was it twitchy feeling (but nimble)

I have no doubt the engine could work out a 180. Of course you will feel less torque and less power and the agility will be reduce BUT look wise it should be awsome. Imho there is nothing better looking on a bike than a 180 ass, especially on a small bike. To bad there is no easy way like for a 160.

Actually, I think Psyber did the 160 pretty easily which is what I am thinking of doing as well. I just don't want to lose what little "ooomph" that the bike has.

Psyber: have you figured out the group buy on the 78mm pistons yet? That might be a good move and I have an extra cylinder I can get bored.

i did a 160 and if you want to fit larger, you are going need to figure out chainline up front. I shimmed carrier by 2 washers and its still a bit close for comfort.

i've been working on a Matlab project for engineering analysis class and have a materials exam tomorrow...i'll try to call in sometime but it's just been busy.

GF's subaru is getting a new clutch also.

Well, I got my shims in last week from BeerGarage (Cheers) so I think I am going to finish that this week so I can ride a couple of days or so. Then, i think I may spend a few hours taking off the swingarm and shock and seeing what fits and what doesn't and how much hassle it will all be. i will do my best for pics if things go well or even if they don't go well. Pics are goood. mmmmmmmmm pics.
