True Horsepower?

I am trying to find a true horsepower rating for the gs.  I thought I saw 38 hp somewhere but can't remember where.  I have an 89gs.  There is a wiki pedia site that says 89-? e model had 52 hp stock and the f model had 47.  Seat of the pants tells me no way that my bike puts out 52 hp.  That is somewhat close to an sv and there is no way I can hang with a stock sv on the track.  Anyone know the true "claimed" stock horsepower from the factory?  Thanks!

gsJack

The GS has always produced approx 40 rear wheel horsepower as measured on a dyno.  Here are the results of all published road test I've found since the 1st one appeared in Cycle magazine in 1989:

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Hmm.... I posted this about an hour ago. I wonder where it went...
I can only assume GSJack erased it so he could take credit.

I think I've been wasting too much time here at this kiddie city forum answering the same questions over and over again.  I need a vacation.

It's like that isn't it.

Nah it's easier to post on a forum, some one will answer.

I did google it and I came up with 52 hp which I know is not right.  Even allowing for loses due to a 20 year old engine, my bike has no where near that kind of hp.  That's why I asked here for people who have had this bike longer than my one race season for an accurate answer.

People are doing really bad lately at not actually reading the OPs post. Even if he hadn't researched it, maybe he was just lonely and wanted to talk to us :kiss3:, considering this IS a motorcycle forum, and it could be 100% obsolete if we just chose to google every question we come up with.

I completely disagree. There's no reason why we cannot progress. If all the questions/problems have been answered, and then still all the possible mods that could be thought of have been done (yeah right), then fine, we can just talk meet & greet, organize rides, buy/sell things, talk about how much we like/hate our bikes, and just say hi. If he was lonely, he should have just said hi. I'm all for being newb friendly, but all forums are like this. And it is our job to humiliate those who cannot bother to respect the community enough to search and follow instructions. If they cannot follow instructions, why bother answering their questions? They won't follow your advice/answer either until they learn to lurk a little and search when they goto a new forum. If I were a mod, I'd delete threads like this to save us all the embarrassment.

I'll play nice

The short answer is, there is no answer. Depends on who rated it, and when. The manufacturer claimed both 47 and 52. But who cares, it's irrelevant. Peak HP is just one of many more useful bits of data, AND your motor's 20 years old! AND, the SV will lay waste to any GS, forget it.

*edit* fastedmiami, you're not a newb, and you have track experience.... why would you ask such a thing? By the way, I'm not even sure where the "claimed" HP numbers come from. I mean, there isn't even a claim on Suzuki's website for the '09 GS. As one of the very few people that track, let alone RACE a GS, you're one of the elite!  :woohoo:

Just asking im not saying either of you is right or wrong, but if the moderators do remove or edit something does it record or say it anywhere? cause Buddha modded the title on one of my post to better explain what was inside, which im fine with, it was no big deal to me cause he wasnt taking any credit from me, but it did say edited by buddha or something like that.  :dunno_white:

I did not and will not alter or delete anything from this thread.  Why would I?  I have posted on this forum to be helpful and have never given a thought to getting credit for anything.  That concept strikes me as totally childish but well in line with the current tone of this forum.  The fact that tt_four's post is erroneous as to the facts is unimportant, readers can consider the source and choose for themselves.  Like I said above, I've had enough of this kiddie city forum for a while and will have nothing further to say here for now.  I would appreciate it if the management would remove my name as a monitor.

I was full on, 100% kidding about that statement. I in no way felt like Jack wants credit for knowing a GSs hp so bad that he would mess with my posts. I'm awful at computers and I probably just forgot to hit the send button, or just closed the window before it finished posting. People kid around on this site a lot, and I usually feel like those people know each other better than I know anyone on this forum, so people probably have no idea when I'm kidding around, which is 95% of the time, so it usually comes back to bite me for looking like a jerk.

I saw the thread with buddha and another member, it DID say it had been edited, and this post did not say it was edited so I knew no one had messed with it.

Sorry if anyone thought I was being serious and took it the wrong way.

commuterdude

My GS has over 60 hp since I got one of those electronic remote fart machines and jb welded it under the rear fender.   Now whenever I hit the fart button,  BRRAAAAAAPPPP, 60 horses.

Gee...I go away for a while and find that...nothing has changed.

I have no leg to stand on here...when I first started posting in March I knew nothing about motorcycles. Now...8 months and 5,000 miles later...I know "almost" nothing about motorcycles... :icon_lol:

I have no right to to be irritated with people asking for answers that have been posted a thousand times...yet...I was still getting annoyed after seeing it over and over again.

When I dynoed my F model stock it made 39.2whp, which with standard ~20% drive train losses equals 49-50bhp. fully modified my f model makes 44whp :woohoo: my mods are listed in my sig.
07 black GS500F; fenderectomy, NGK DPR9EIX-9 plugs, 15T sprocket, Jardine exhaust, K&N lunchbox, 20-62.5-152.5 jets 1 washer, timing advance 6*, flushmount signals,Tommaselli clipons over tree, sv650 throttle, 20w forkoil, sport demon tires, Buddha fork brace, Goodridge SS lines, double bubble

Used to be normal to quote HP at the crank. I think I even remember Honda quoted HP by measuring at crank and added back theoretical internal friction inside motor, to be able to claim 100hp for the 1979 CBX1000. This is like "HP at combustion chamber".

The Suzuki GS1000 was a better bike. The GS500 is half a GS1000.

Now its normal to quote hp at drive wheels. so same motor gets quoted at 50 then and 40 now.

what is hp? is it sauce :dunno_white:
