Carburator problems... again.

posting for a friend cause im stumped: hes had his bike sitting for about a year. we went ahead and did a detailed cleaning of the carb and emptied the tank. we thought about doing a tank treatment but opted to use 2 fuel filters instead ($ issues) and put the carb back together with existing o-rings because we had to wait for a carb kit to arrive. the bike started up fine but the idle screw did not affect the engine rpm at all. when you twisted the throttle, the bike would die out immediately. yesterday the carb kit finally came in. started the bike to see if it had the same symptoms as last week, still started but no idle change. we took the carb apart again and noticed some green gunk building on the needle jet again. cleaned it off and installed new o-rings, gaskets, and the needle assembly connected to the float. put everything back together and tried to fire it up. now the bike does not start up  :dunno_white:. any ideas anyone? thanks in advance.

OK did you open the fuel tap @ the bottom of the tank ?
Also you have to put it in prime for 1-2 mins before starting to fill up the floats with fuel.

Past that, you probably didn't re assemble something right. I'll wait for your response and post the next few cos no sense taking you to step 10 when you're @ step 1.

thanks for the fast reply buddha. yes we did open up the tap and put it on prime until we stopped seeing flow through the fuel filters we installed. going to have buddy take it apart again and see if it helps.

OK fine then what did you set the air screws, the floats etc to.
Also what does it do, crank nice and fast and strong but not start ?
Did you change spark plugs ?
Did you connect the vacuum line back ?
How about the caps on the tops ?
Is the choke working ?
We'll get deeper once we eliminated these.
Cool.

i followed the rejetting matrix on http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Upgrades.Rejetting but i did not reset the floats nor know how to. so the air screw is turned out 3 turns with 1 washer on the needle jet. engine cranks great and sounds like its about to start but doesnt go. spark plugs were changed the first time we cleaned the carbs so theyre practically brand new. we replaced the small o-ring on the top. those caps are still in tact as well. the choke works as far as we know. moved it over by hand when we suspected that the line was bad. the vac hose is the one that connects to the left side carb or the hose that comes off the T on the top of the carbs?

Paulcet

Vacuum line is the one that connects to the left side carb.  The top T needs to be left open.

First, see if you need to:

OK haido, what year is your bike.
The float thing is important, but on the 01+ they are super stiff and sorta dont self adjust. 89-00 yea they bend like butter and go anywhere all the time.

Upper rear T is very important. Open, left to atmosphere, it needs to get external air pressure else it wont fill the bowl or let fuel out of the bowl.

OK man the bike ran after the plug swap ? I would suspect the plugs if they did not. The problem isn't that the plugs are old, I suspected new but defective plugs.

If all these are eliminated, yea make sure you look @ the parts diagram and go over everything we said, and we are sorta at a dead end. I could check it for you, cos sometimes you wont see your own mistakes ... I'd charge you 25 and return shipping for it, and a rejet can be added for 20 more. Rejet to your set up, not a random DJ stuff.

buddy's bike is a 94. ill have him check the upper T. the plugs ran fine the last time he started it and the day before we took it apart to put new gaskets and needle assembly that came with the carb kit. we'll be sure to do a float height check also and rule that out. thanks for the help and ill post an update when were done doing the stuff you guys recommended.

The Buddha

K sorry that leaves one option pretty much. Error @ reassembly.
Follow the manual and parts diagram.
