Oil coming from under gear lever changer

Hey

If anyone has any suggestions, more the merrier.

Noticed a little oil dropping when I park up coming from under the gear changer in the last couple of days.

Today I got oil over my boot when changing and foot slipped from under whilst changing up so could potentially be dangerous so any suggestions most welcome as to where or what this is??

sounds like the gear selector shaft seal is leaking, i have replaced one on a honda cb450 which was very easy took 10 min. but i have never changed one in my gs500 so i dont want to tell you its easy, but i imagine its prolly pretty easy. hopefully some one who has changed one on this a gs will chime in. good luck

I could be that seal, or the one for your clutch push rod, or the ones under your front sprocket on the transmission output shaft.  The shift shaft seal is a bit difficult to replace because the clutch has to be removed to get the shaft out to get to the seal.  The others are pretty easy, though.  Take off the sprocket cover, degrease the entire area (no pressurized water!  If oil can get out, then pressurized water can SURLEY get in!)  Then put the cover back on.  Ride it for that day, then take it back off and see where it is coming from.  Mine leaks from ALL of 'em!  I'm a broke bastard.  Buy a Clymer manual.  It will tell you how to do everything!

It could just be chain lube collecting unside the cover and seeping out. Before you go replacing seals, take the cover off, clean all the crap out and see if the problem goes away.

What year is it?  A couple of people here had a problem with the shift seal.  Pigeonroost, was one I think.

+1 chain lube.  I got a bit keen with the spray when I bought the bike, lubed the chain and went for a ride.

Got back and found lube had collected at the chain guide and was dripping down onto the sidestand. 

Take sprocket cover / chain guard off.  Degrease then ride for a day and see where it's coming from.

+2 on chain lube, I had "oil" running out on my boot once and it was gobs of chain lube inside the housing coming out the shift shaft hole and running down the lever onto the boot.  Starting to spot again now when parked hot so I'll have to clean it again in the spring.

check your head gasket also, my left shifter and boot was also covered in oil when my head gasket cracked. only had few hundred miles on it too, warranty took care of it.

Well did turn out to be something to do with chain, I gave it a really good clean with kero and re-lubed it. There was a build up of thick grease in the engine cover over the years and when I had used the kero to clean the chain it had gone down into there and thinned out the grease so when it heated up I ended up with what looked like an oil leak.

Gave it all a good clean out and now no leaking.
