Hey guys,

Just a quick one: When people quote how many washers they have on the mains does that assume people have the needle on the highest clip setting, or are the washers for people without a movable clip on their carb needle?

If its a stupid question feel free to flame me......   :dunno_black:

there are no stupid questions

i believe you have a dyno jet kit in your bike if you have multiple spots for the clip.

can you post a picture of your needles please, with good focus on the tapered end ?

:)

edit: the needle on the LEFT is a stock gs ... just for reference:

the one on the right is dynojet crap, and annoying as hell to find in an otherwise nice bike :)

I think I've read on here before that the European market bikes came with adjustable needles from the factory.  Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

If memory serves me my European GS has an adjustable clip on the needle. I've also wondered what all the talk about washers was all about.

USA models do not have an adjustable clip.  A washer can be added to raise the needle higher in the seat.

That pic ohgood posted is a euro GS needle vs a DJ needle. US needle has 1 slot for the E clip and that is it obviously.

Washers are even smaller than 1 clip position. So euro bikes need washers if they need to lift it 1/2 a clip.

US bikes are set with that fixed clip ~2 from top. I once got a good comparison between the 2 from someone from england, on that old mailing list we used to have pre 2000.

The problem is when you need it leaner ... US bike needles can be lifted but not lowered obviously.

Usually its never a problem, I am yet to run across one that didn't need 1-3+ washers ... but I guess I'd set it to a smaller main size and adjust it that way.

Cool.

so adding washers to the needle when rejetting does what? i noticed that the washers that came with my mikuni jet kit had an I.D. smaller the the O.D. of my needle and discarded them thinking i did not need them.  should i not have done that?

Well if the id < od they won't do any good, so you were prob ok there.  If I remember correctly, raising the needle enriches the midrange rpm mixture.

Yeah my needle is the stock Euro GS one. (See below)

So if the US ones are stuck at the top but one position, if someone quotes using two washers is that the same as me moving mine up one clip setting? Looks like the guy who had the bike before me might have stuck one washer in there already (But I didn't bother getting it out for the photoshoot  ;) )

Drunknmonky - Didn't you buy a jet pack from me ?

I have had some weird crap happen with the washer lot I bought. I used the exact same part number as before but I appear to have got some strange ass mix ... sadly I dont have an 04, OK never mind I do, have to find it ... but I do. I am not sure of it yet, but I have had 2 complaints since the new set of washers, and there have been several that have said it worked fine.  :dunno_white:

I will get the 04 needles out and make sure I remove the washers that dont fit out so they dont get into your packs.

Crazy fish - if you are in europe, it prolly is a stock needle. Unlikely though if you're in the US. Factory (aftermarket company called factory) used to make needles just like the stock ones but wiht grooves. Maybe that are what you have.

Probably a stupid question but anyway: To richen the mixture should the clip be moved left or right in the picture above?

yep.. they cam from you.. washers made it about halfway up the needle and wouldn't go any farther.. figured they came with the jets and were not meant for me necessarily. tossed them cause they didn't fit.. you're telling me i did need the washers, i just had the wrong ones aren't you?

Drunknmonky : correct on all counts. I'll pull washers and needles out get em fitted and send em over.
You have all the other jetting in place, you should be able to use it till you open it again.

BTW being this cold, how does it run especially 1/4 throttle to 1/2 throttle. Try both on steady throttle and on acceleration and post back. That is where the needle really starts its influence.

Lean affetcs it most when cold. All the jets make it richer than stock, so it definetly is better than its original starting point.
