Won't turn over...

So I got the bike (06 gs500f) out after it sitting all winter and it fired right up.. I pushed it around to the garage to clean it up to put it up for sale and it won't turn over at all now. This doesn't make any sense at all. I checked everything I can see as far as connections. The only thing that happens when I try to start it is the head light turns off but then comes back on when I let off the button. Any one have any ideas? I really don't know where to go and it doesn't really make any sense

Is the kill switch in the RUN position?  Is the clutch in?

Start simple.  Never hurts to check your terminal tightness and grounds too.

Checked my terminals and stuff like that all the simple stuff. My questions really are... Is there a fuse some where that may have gone out. Is there a easy way to by pass the switch and essentially hot wire the bike? I'm trying to narrow it down to either the starter or the switch itself.

There is only one fuse (if you see two, you still have the spare). If anything has power, the fuse is fine.

Usual problem is the clutch switch, but the headlight dying does point to a crapped out battery. You can charge it and it can still be a useless lump of lead that's no good...

Easy test. Pull off the seat and rear plastics. Neutral. Switch on and choke on if you actually want it to start. Short the terminals on the start relay with a wrench. If the bike does not crank, you have a bad battery or bad connections in the heavy cables between the battery and the starter (and back again). If the moon is blue you might have a bad starter, but that's way down the list.

If it does crank with the relay shorted, you have a bad clutch switch, starter switch, or start relay, most likely - there are a few other parts that can get involved, but usually don't.

the light only dies when I press the start button but then comes back on when I release it. Just like it does if the bike is running and you press the button or try to start it

put a volt meter on your battery should be over 12 volts then do the same test and push the start button see how low it drops im going with a junk battery.

I had a similar problem..Mine was the battery. Try replacing the battery. I would turn it on and hit the start button and all my lights would dim, then come back to life

I was able to jump start it. so I don't think it's the battery also the battery was brand new last year. Which is more likely to be bad the clutch switch or the actual starting switch?

I'm confused, did it start normally when you jump started it?  If so, then I would think it's a discharged/bad battery.  A battery will naturally discharge and sulfate if it sits a long time.

As for you other question, the clutch switch can get out of whack if the bike has been dropped on that side.  My '01 is finicky.  I just hold the start button in and feather the clutch until I find the sweet spot on the switch   :D

If you jump started it (attached jumper cables to a good battery/car), the clutch switch and starting switch both worked, and the battery was shot...barking up the wrong tree will get you nowhere. The headlight does not "normally go out" when cranking with a good battery.

If you mean "shorted the relay" and you said "jump start" you need to communicate more clearly. Jump start has a rather specific meaning. The clutch switch is always the first choice among the switch problems.

My bad I shorted the relay to start it

joshr08

ok so its clutch switch, side stand switch or neutral switch now my moneys on clutch and thats an easy call take the wires off the bottom of the clutch lever and hook them together.  make sure the bikes in neutral and him the button.  let us know what happens

just tried that. I took a piece of wire and stuck it in both holes of the plug and still nothing. Whats the probability that its that starter relay?

guitarking135

does any one know where I can get a wiring schematic at?

For what its worth, my '06 headlight goes out when I hit the starter button (good battery, has always done this). I think its designed to do that to unload the battery while starting. If shorting the clutch switch didn't help, it could be the sidestand relay. Connect the orange wire to the orange/blue and see if it works then.
