Led signals

Hey guys. So I bought 4 Moto LED signal lights. I hooked them all up the right way. I turn the key on and test the signal and what happens is that All lights come and stay on at the same time! If I turn left, all 4 lights come on and don't flash. Same thing if I turn right... My battery is a 12.0v. And these lights work on 12.0v's. So now what? Do I need a restrictor? Should I replace the old relay? I'm pretty stuck on this one

you need to put some resistors in there or whatever it takes. I know nothing at all about electrical work to actually tell you what's needed, but basically the turn signal system is set up so if one light goes out, none of them will blink, and that's how you know when one of your bulbs goes out. Well you put on the led lights, which do not draw any where near the electricity of normal light bulbs, so now your bike thinks all 4 of your bulbs are burned out, and it isn't blinking. Do whatever people do to make the bike think it still has working light bulbs and you'll be set.

like tt said, adding resistors will make everything work.

Another neater way (no extra parts laying around) is to swap out the mechanical flasher for an electronic flasher, and then wire in a diode at the turn signal indicator.  Kirkurian (spelling???) makes a nice cheap diode kit.  You can get the flasher at the auto parts store.

Unplug the old flasher and plug the new one in.  Cut one wire and splice the diode in.  Run an extra wire to ground and you're done.
My 90 GS500E has spread itself across the nation.

That's the way to go.

Search, too.  Lots of GSTwinners have been down this road.

Ineedanap is right on with what needs to be done.  I have all led blinkers set up.  Fortunately the original owner had put in an electronic flasher so i didn't have to replace that but i did have to splice in a diode and run the one side to a ground. (I just ran a wire to the ground on the battery itself)

there is a link to the diode kit that he is referring to.

I tried this once with some LED light strips stuck right to my tail, and it took several trips to radio shack and me doing an awful job of just adding a ton of resistors inline  to try to get the lights to blink right. I ended up just scrapping the idea since I hate electrical stuff.

Do you need one of those diode kits for each turn signal, or do you just get one and put it in on the flasher? just for fututre reference.

bassmechanicsz

It only takes one diode and it actually goes by the indicator light on the dash.  I forget exactly which wire it went on but i know I installed it right behind my headlight (F model) on one of the wires going into the indicator on the dash.  If nobody else can tell you which wire exactly i can look at my bike this weekend and tell you exactly which wire it is connected to.  Their was a post on here that had a wiring diagram showing exactly where and how to connect the diode.

So you are going to spend $32 for all that?!  Surely we can figure out what kind of diode is in there and just do that ourselves?

I am not going to spend that much.

OK EE's, what size/kind of diode goes in there?

It is only $8 for the diode.  You only need 1 diode for the bike.  You probably could go to radio shack and get the diode you need for $5 but is it really worth the trouble to save $3 and knowing what you got is proven and works as others on this board have also bought the kuryakan diode and have no problems.

I started typing my other response while actually doing some work at work so I didn't get to read what you said after the fact.

Anyway, so there only needs to be one then?!

Can we splice any light or does it need to be a signal?

$7.99 for three pieces of wire and a diode.

$7.99 to ship three pieces of wire and a diode.  :bs:

I just ordered it, lol.

Needs two (the diode kit sold by Kuyriakyuinkiakun is really two diodes) like this at radio shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036268

$.99 for the pair.

Sweet, I just paid $16 for two .99 cent diodes and wire, LMAO.

When it gets here I will rip it apart to confirm the internals so no one else has to spend that much.

Do I need to get a new flasher still or does the Kuryakyn diode deal take care of it all?

Still need the electronic flasher (or "load balancers") in addition to the diode kit.

LOL, that's 49.5 cents each!  And they probably buy them 1000 at a time for 4.5 cents each.

So years ago when i put 60-count led brake lights in my Jeep I had the same issue.  What I did was open the flasher unit and cut a bridge in the board.  That saved me the $20 and has been fine for 5 years.

I wonder if this is the same type deal?
Is this the same kind of flasher found in a vehicle that is in the GS?

I think it'll be different.  None of those in the ledlight.com link are like the GS flasher.

So where is the GS signal flasher.

Better yet, who knows which electronic flasher I need.

Better than that, show me a link!!!!!

I can always use help, thanks.   ;)

The GS flasher is on the right, on the subframe, near the starter relay.

Here's a link to an electronic 2-wire one.
