Hello Folks,  Normally, I live on the GS Resources site, as I am an old guy with an old GS.  Decided I would extend an offer to anyone who is interested in obtaining shims or exchanging shims with the GS Shim Club.  We have been doing this for a couple of years now and it is working pretty well, we currently have around 460 shims available.  If you are interested in this let me know, message me.  Ray

Yes, please explain how the shim club works!  I'm supposing you swap shims?

I'd also head over to the main forum and get to know some people. As a general rule on internet forums, people aren't going to know what to think when your very first post is something they may be spending money on.

We used to have a shim kit that got passed around, but it eventually dissapeared, so I'm sure plenty of people would be interested. I myself am due for a valve adjustment, I know all 4 are too tight, but unless there's any way our shim club works aside from you saying "send me a couple dollars and I'll send you shims", I'll probably have to pass. Nothing against you, but you know, it's the internet...

CURRENT INVENTORY

The club is an exchange system, send in a shim get one back. Only ask for a small donation to join, members pay for all postage and are responsible for shims they ship. We can sell a few shims to members that want a few spares on hand. Please send any questions to me in a pm.

Some of the shims that I receive are being polished down to more usable sizes and come out with a finish very similar to the K&L shims. Please join us in this project. I think everyone who is a part of it has been happy with the results.
If you have already contributed to the shim pool, either in shims or cash donation, you are a lifetime member. (probably my lifetime) Postage assistance is appreciated. If you have received shims from the pool and have not yet returned them, please do so, other members may need what you have removed and are obligated to return.

We also have a bunch of shim buckets that are free for members, just pay the postage.

Have several shim storage boxes available, box by itself or with shims you want. Let me know what you need and we'll get it set up for you.

If you need to send shims to the club pool, the address is:

Hi tt,  If you would like to take a look at the thread on the GS Resources, it is in the parts and services section.  I think you'll see this is very legit.  Later, Ray

Wow, I had no idea there were that many shim sizes. I thought it just went 240-245-250-255-260, well you get the idea. I may end up taking you up on that. I called the shop I was going to ride out to to pick up a shim tonight, so I could measure all of mine and see what I needed(all currently too tight for my feeler gauge), but they said they didn't have any in stock. There's another shop I might call tomorrow, but otherwise I was just gonna find some online. I'll see what kind of prices I find. If not I may try out your exchange. I don't have any spares, I might just have to pull one or two from my motor, wait for some new ones, then send you the rest and take some time off of riding.

tt,  The lowest price I've seen is at Z1.  Generally around $5 per shim and $6 minimum shipping.  Makes them a bit expensive to buy only a few, but very good in quantity.  If you want some place holder shims I have a number of Kawasaki/Yamaha/Ford 29mm shims for $3 each.  I also will sell a few from the pool to help a member get started on his own inventory.  Cheaper than Z1.  Ray

If you have any doubts about the viability of the shim club, you may want to take a look at the comments on this GSR thread.  Ray

What are "place holder" shims and why are they 29mm?

The "place holder" shims are Kawasaki/Yamaha/Ford 29mm shims.  Some of the guys at GSR like to use them during valve clearance checks, as they are easier to remove due to the loose fit.  These are available at a low cost as they were sent in to exchange for 29.5 shims, they are NOT to be used for normal operation. These are also good for a "check" shim as these are smaller thicknesses.  Ray

Iceman404

hi ghost,

I have a question for you, right now my GS is my only form of transportation (car AND bicycle are both broken. awesome!) and i'm in dire need of a valve adjustment. Problem is I can't afford to have the bike not running in order to exchange shims, so how would I gain access to the club? a donation?

Also, I would suggest changing the title of your post to something more descriptive. it took a fairly lengthy search to find this post and I feel like easy access to such a great resource would really help a lot of people!  :thumb:

thanks for sharing on the twins forum!

I'm new on the GS Twin and haven't really figured out how everything works here.  On the GSR there is a section for parts and services, this makes it pretty easy to find the thread.  I may yet figure this out.  (or not, I'm an old guy)  Ray

Ghost, no big deal! we're friendly over her too :-) Thanks for bringing the opportunity our way!!

FYI: I sent you a PM on the GS Resources forum about the shims

All 29mm shims are gone now.  A fellow wanted all of them, so I let him have them all.  Ray

The GS valve shim club is still going if you are interested.  Ray
