hello gs people. i spent several hours last night reading every gs500 noise thread i could find on the entire internets and am as yet none the wiser.

ive only had this engine in the bike for a few weeks but until recently it had only been run on the stand to get it set up.

i set out on it the other evening for a short test run round the block which went ok although a little lumpy (due to the carbs i feel) but when i got back to the driveway and blipped the trottle this tick/clack/click/smack type noise started. have a listen.

ive taken the head back off and double checked timing, cam chain, tensioner, cams, lobes etc and nothing seems out of whack. valves are within tolerance and ive fitted a brand new genuine head gasket but the noise remained after i put it back together although seems louder and lower down in the engine than before.

my dad thinks its from the cylinder area but i think its from the upper crank but we both agree its from the left side.

before it gets a full tear down im hoping anyone can offer some suggestions as to is cause/source cos im almost bald from it.

Left side....  not likely but maybe do a search on "goat's" (here on GSTwin, not google!  Not that there is anything wrong with that...)

thanks for the reply.
im familiar with goats but does it make that sort of noise?

The Buddha

Unbalanced feel, and noise from left definetly bears checking out for goats. And yes Mine made horrible noises, but I was so far gone on mine ... but think about it, rotor and stator hitting each other will be noisy.
Cool.

If it is GOATS, talk to SlimKlim.  He's got parts you may want.

Whats is this "GOATS" you all are talking about?

Alternator rotor and stator make contact and pretty much bash each other to pulp.

yeah, sometimes i get that on my bike too, particularly if i'm slowed down to turn into a parking spot. lol sometimes it'll get embarassingly loud, but i'm familair with hearing that sound too.  whe you figure out what to do, i'd love to know as well.

The Buddha

Yours could be the cam chain ...the imbalanced feel and noise out the left end of the crank = goats. Remmeber drive chain also is on the left.
Cool.

Alrright. I'll bring it to my friend and have him check it out.

got about 4mm vertical play in the left piston/conrod so looks like the big end went.

left cylinder? did you run the engine without oil? 4mm is mad. the rodbearing has a thickness of 2x 1.5mm.....

engine hasnt been run for any length of time in my possession so unsure how it was treated previous.
4mm may be a slight exageration but it feels like a lot of movement.
