Rear Shock is like a pogo stick

k so i just bought a '06 gs and the rear shock is super bouncy when i'm going 45 plus and hit a little bump or a whoop it bucks me up like a bronco lol. i can see that the setting is on 7. is this the tightest setting? and i've read that a lot of people upgrade to the katana 600 shock. i way 140 and i'm 6'1. i would like a stiffer ride so that i could push the bike a little harder.

Yes 7 is the highest preload setting. It doesn't actually make it any stiffer just reduces sag. That might give you the idea its stiffer. Funny you mention the stock shock trying to buck you off. I never had that problem (I've got more pounds on you at the same height.) Now with the much stiffer katana shock, my GS will try to buck me off if I go fast on crappy roads.

turn your preload down, your the weight the stock shock is ment for. the pogo might be because the shock is topping out. turn the preload down before you buy any thing, ill bet it gets better.

Higher preload reduces travel. That in turn reduces the effect of pogo ing. Pogoing is an indication that its got no fluid action. reducing the preload will increase the pogo effect. Now if you have air on top in the fluid column (which you should not have unless it has leaked) then the pogo effect will be reduced by reduction in preload. I doubt it though that you have a fully functional shock with air on top.

What do you weigh ?

If you're under 150 or so, run the stock shock in 5-6, under 125, 4-5, under 100 dammit man you're wasting away get some lunch or something.

thats why i said turn down the preload, he only weighs 140lbs.
