Finally dropped my zook off for some new rubber, the old set were lookin' rather tatty indeed. Can't wait to get her back! I hope they don't scratch it, the bastards.

Is it worth shimming the camshaft? Any ideas on this? shim it out to minimal endfloat?
First, you don't know for sure if it is cam shaft knocking.
Only older bikes have that problem. Somewhere along the line Suzuki added spring shim washers to eliminate it.
You should determine the source (i.e. location) if the knocking before tearing into things.
It could be valves, counter balance, cracked cam journals or a host of other things.
Determine what the problem is before randomly doing  things which may only make things worse.

Just to add some info on the infamous camshaft knock... Suzuki released the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) in May of '05 regarding the 'shim fix' (well the revised version was released on that date).  I remember reading the shims were added on stock models in '06, and that models up through '05 could have the knock as they do not have the shims.  I remember reading that specifically because I was trying to find whether the sound from my '04 was the cam knock, and after testing by the info in the bulletin, I believe that is the sound mine makes....

I copied this out of the bulletin for when I checked mine, and I would advise anyone who thinks they may have the endplay to try and confirm using the method from Suzuki's TSB:

QuoteSolution: This knocking noise may be caused by the camshafts walking side to side during operation due to excessive end play. The "walking" movement will not cause damage.

Note: Test the source of the noise for camshaft "walking" by carefully leaning the motorcycle over to the left (towards the sidestand) while the engine is running and continue to listen for the noise. The noise will quiet if the camshafts are loaded toward the left hand side.

i didnt notice this before with stock filter ... and maybe i just didnt notice it?... i really dont know if its a K&N effect .. clean filter effect ... lean/rich now effect .. or what the heck?!

Could be lean surging.  The K&N is less restrictive than stock and thus allows the engine to pull more air; since the jets are unchanged, they are not metering more fuel to compensate for the additional air, thus resulting in a leaner mix.  Coupled with the fact that the stock GS is jetted lean, you're now really lean.

Got in a NOS right side panel. Looks great! I just located a left side panel on ebay so that's on its way. Now to fix the cowling and she will look real darn purdy like!

Cooling off a good bit, so took the bike to work this morning.  As it was warming up, I noticed an unusual knocking sound.  Video below.  Off some searching, it looks to be normal camshaft knocking?

Mine does the exact same thing, but it also does it when I come to a stop ..

Yep that sounds like cam end float knock.

Joolstacho

Just out of interest... I'm ReCo-ing my head at the mo', camshaft endfloat is approx 0.18mm with the shim washer, which is 0.9mm thick. Looks to me like a thicker washer would be ideal, about 1.5mm would do it. Obviously we need a few thou running clearance. (Washer is 22mm ID X 29.7 OD) if any machinist wants to knock up a few!)

That noise certainly sounds like camshaft endfloat... I get that same 'clack-clack' sound when I wiggle the camshafts side to side. (I've never run my bike, so I don't know if I'll have the noise when it's running).
Probably it's perfectly  alright, just manufacturing tolerences, because there's negligable wear on the head thrust face.
Beam me up Scottie....

R6 rear shock swap last night. Would not go in from the bottom. Took the tank and air box out and then smooth sailing. Will try out his weekend.

Yeah, any model year of R6 shock older than 2010? I think it was? (can't remember at the moment)... has to be installed from the top.  The newer ones have a smaller reservoir and can squeeze in from the side.  All 06+ will ultimately fit and work the same, they just made a smaller reservoir in later years.

Did you watch the conversion video?
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Rear shock is now much better than the original one. Is there a tread on how to adjust it? Right now it feels like the front is on a delay compared to the rear.

This is a good resource that I've used for suspension setup. This guy goes through pretty much everything. I'm not a professional by any means, but it sounds like you may have your low speed damping set too high in the rear (assuming you're taking about smoother bumps in the road).

Bastards did scratch it! And left my right hand side tensioner undone and rattling around for me to tighten up! ARGH. Butchers.

Put new oil in, torqued down frame and engine bolts, put gas tanks on, new fuel lines, put lunchbox filter back on, finished carb lines, fixed a leaky fuel petcock,  made some positive and negative cable extensions hooked up the battery and she started right up. :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Sick of the floppy rear end after rolling back into the concrete wall at work and cracking the rear guard, so making a subframe based on what the stock guard uses to give it some support. Pretty much finished, just need some more time to get it mounted up and hopefully no more floppy rear end...

Also dropped the carb needles half a notch last Sunday and so far she's much nicer at small throttle openings too  :thumb:

Rear end sorted... a little crooked but I'll cope, not quite as bad as it looks in the photo though!

And a bit of video to demonstrate the firmness now...

Was fiddling about with a camera mount position ... Bumped the bike a little.... Hang on? .. Did that exhaust just wiggle? ... Yep!

Off we go to the hardware store... M10 Allen head bolt x 35mm ... Bit short   :icon_rolleyes:

Oh well ... Maybe tmw I'll get a 45mm or 50mm and a machine washer for the outside of the rubber ... Got my lock nut for it though .... Danged vibratey bike! ... Don't know where the other bolt went ... Only last ride though ..  :icon_neutral:
