Is it a stinky (2stroke)? I have a friend who is currently restoring a Bultaco, they look very similar
I love the smell of 2-stroke in the morning. It makes me feel alive!

I'll take that as a yes.

I put the MX wheels on my bike and took it out to play in the mud. Very good day. I only smacked my head off the ground once  :woohoo:

I started on my first valve clearance check yesterday and got as far as measuring the clearances and the existing shim sizes. Unfortunately, the local dealer does not stock GS500 shims so I'll have to wait until my order comes in to finish the job.

My bike is a 2007 model with fairing (in Ontario,Canada) and I have been referencing a Clymer manual for 1989-2002 models. I have found there are some differences so I had to do a little guessing along the way. :technical:
- My bike has the PAIR (2ND AIR) system that includes two hoses coming off the exhaust side of the engine which connect to a metal thing bolted to the left side of the frame cross member above the cylinder head cover. From there, a third hose goes to the airbox and a fourth small hose (maybe a vacuum line) attaches near the carbs. I had to remove the metal thing from the frame and disconnect all the hoses to make room for the cylinder head cover to come out.
- There is a small black plastic canister with a small hose coming off of it bolted to the right side of the cross member. I removed this and left it dangling by the hose so it was out of the way
- The clutch and throttle cables needed to be disconnected from the carb side to make room. The throttle cable is a dual cable set up, not a single cable like the Clymer manual says. I removed the airbox to get the throttle disconnected although I'm not sure if this is necessary.

On the recommendations of other forum members, I'll be setting the exhaust clearances at 0.08mm - 0.13mm. The bike is at 24700km and here's what I found.

#1 intake < 0.001"/0.0254mm (current shim 265) (new shim 260 or 255)
#1 exhaust 0.002"/0.0508mm (current shim 275) (new shim 270)
#2 intake < 0.001"/0.0254mm (current shim 262) (new shim 260 or 255)
#2 exhaust < 0.001"/0.0254mm (current shim 275) (new shim 270, 265, or 260) <-- no clearance, bucket would not rotate

In order to get the shim out of the #2 exhaust bucket, I loosened the camshaft bearing cap bolts gradually in a crisscross pattern until I was able to rotate the stuck bucket by hand. With the bucket rotated so I could get at the little notch, I tightended down the camshaft caps again and torqued to 90in-lbs. Now with access to that little notch in the bucket, I was able to use the valve shim tool to depress the bucket and pop the shim out.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but after I had put the shim back in the #2 intake I was rotating the engine using the 19mm nut on the signal generator and the shim suddenly shot across the garage and landed on the ground. It scared the crap out of me! :icon_eek: After inspecting the shim and around the bucket and cam, everything looks OK so I put it back in and rotated the engine a couple more times nice and slow. I think that the shim may have been floating on oil and when the cam started to push on it, it shifted and didn't sit in the bucket properly. :dunno_black:

I also installed some lowered foot pegs, new air filter, and new spark plugs. Wrenching on this bike is enjoyable but not nearly as fun as riding it. C'mon Spring!! :woohoo:

Adjusted the clutch and throttle cables this morning.  They had a bit too much slack for my taste.

Took the top carb caps off to look at the stock needle setup on the 2009 GS.  Had no problems getting the JIS screws off.  Then went to ACE and got some M5 .8 cap screws.  When I went to button it back up, torqued too much and destroyed 2 threads in the LH carb body.  A 10 minute job turned into a 2 hour re-tap to M6 1.0   Soft a$$ metal for sure!

Got it back together and runs OK, so no mishaps other than the above.  Lesson learned.  :thumb:

Does that add horsepower when not on a GS500? That's not a GS500 swing arm.  :dunno_black:

That is aGS500 swing arm. With the brake arm mount welded on the bottom.

OK - then it is "sort-of" a GS swing arm. It only increases horsepower half as much.

Finally adjusted the pre-load back to my normal setting after a girl backed out of going for a ride a while back.

The old girl got a service and a new back tyre. Thankfully the arrow max tyre is gone. Stupid tyre that it was. Hated it. Didn't last long either.

man! 65+ degrees right now.

Had my mechanic check the valves on this really quick before i sell it or ride it out this season. Everything looked great and within specs after 11k miles.

Should of bought a jet kit for him to put on as well.

well, technically,

Profile->Account Settings, ModifyProfile->Notifications

There's two sets of dropdown menus. Not very visible otherwise, that I can see.

Mine is displayed as an option on the left hand side of the screen.  No dropdown menus.   :dunno_black:
