quick question, will a 2002 (new style) carburetor work with an older bike (1993)?
i got a good deal on it on ebay, just came in today and i realized it was the newer style. figure i'd ask before i put it on and maybe hurt something on the bike
the bike has stock exhaust and air filter, but i have a k&n lunchbox i was thinking of putting on insetad of stock

aren't the new carbs dual throttle cable compare to the old ones?

yea they are. just looked at the two side by side and the new one has throttle 2 cable slots.

the resistance on the throttle return spring seems to be the same pressure on the new one as on the old one. i don't think the single cable setup will have any effect on its performance.

The newer 3 circuit carbs have a 34 mm throttle body and the older ones were 33 mm so you need the newer intake boots to fit them to the older engine head.  The flanges on the boots are the same.  I put many miles on a 97 GS and now have a 02 GS and the change from the 2 circuit carbs to the current 3 circuit ones is the best improvement ever made on the GSs, the improved mid range performance is well worth the effort.  I had both bikes for a while and switching back and forth I immediately realized the old 97 which I had thoroughly enjoyed riding for 80k miles was no longer as much fun to ride, the new one was just better all around.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

That is good to know. This is another mod riders can do to improve performance on the older models.

This is my first post but I just wanted you guys to know that because of this thread, I gave it a try. I put an 06 carb into my 96 GS successfuly. It makes a real difference in performance and the bike runs better than ever. Thanks for the info!

Welcome.Did you rejet or upgrade the exhaust or air filter?
PICS are GONE never TO return.

Not yet. I wanted to make sure it worked before taking on anything else. Not sure if I have the skill to rejet but I may give it a go.

When did the throttle position sensor become part of the package, would this have any effect on the carb function on an older bike. I may try this.
Current Mods: .85 kg front springs/15wt shock oil, R6 Rear Shock, 45T Rear Sprocket

The TPS does nothing even on the new carb.

No.The newer bikes use the TPS to advance/retard the ignition timing.Just something else to make our controlling government emissions A-holes happy.

I know it's been a while but I just wanted to follow up with you guys on this because I said I would. I just did a re-jet and changed the air filters on this setup and it's working great! I had some hanging idle issues right before I re-jetted but haven't had any trouble at all since. I guess there was an air leak or something. Has anyone else changed to the newer carbs yet?
