Making a sissy bar for the wife

I got a sissy bar back form my older 883 Sportster and want to mount it on a 2007 Gs 500 (the F model).  I would like to make it removable but it need to be able to hold some weight.   My wife is use to the cruisers that i have had before this bike.  She is always use to laying back like a lawn chair.  She hate how this bike doesn't have one so i would like to make one.  Just wondering if anyone have done this or had any ideas.  I though about just making it clamp on the to grab rail but im not sure how much weight that would hold. Thanks!

why not just take the sissy bar and weld in a plate that will bolt on under the seat in the grab bar bolt location.

I made a back rack first, then made the sissy bar. Mines from scratch though. I can take it off fairly easy but don't. We ride so much togehter it's just not pratical.

I though about just making it clamp on the to grab rail but im not sure how much weight that would hold.

Not nearly strong enough, IMHO. I considered bolting a sissy bar in place of the grab handle, and I don't think the grab handle mount is anywhere near strong enough to to that - clamping it to the grab handle would be worse. Fabricate some mounts that bolt in where the underside rails bolt in to get minimally strong enough, I think.

I agree with DOD#i,my grabrail mount has cracked from pulling the outfit onto main stand.

Ok guys, so what about having a support with two bolts in place of the grab handle, then two runners that go forward under the seat and secure to the seat latch bracket. No clue if there's enough room under the seat.

Jay: I found the grab handle not convenient for getting on the center stand.
Below the fuel valve there is a horizontal (slightly diagonal) short bar of the frame. Almost directly above the center stand. I stick my right hand there and grab it, step on the center stand with my right foot, hold handle bar with left hand and then step down hard and do a dead lift with a slight backward pull. Works every time. I'm short - the distance between the handle bard and the back grab rail is a big stretch and once I lost control and the bike fell over. The way I do it now, no chance of falling over.

Thanks for the pics and info.  I only plan on using it when the wife rides with me.  So i may just make some ungodly beast of a back rest that clamps on the sub frame. lol   Hmmmm... I will put some pics up when and if i do make one. Should be funny to look at.  Maybe i just get a Nighthawk 750

Idea,put a single seat on it and have some me time.
AdidasGuy,get where your coming from (not using the grabrail as an aid to getting on stand) but with the sidecar fitted,(same side as stand perch) there`s not much room for more than 1 limb between sidecar/bike and fittings.
