The GS5 has been removed from most markets owing to exhaust emission legislation. It had a stay of execution when Tier 2 legislation was deferred by 2 years but it looks like time has now finally caught up with it.

It's Suzuki of Newmarket.  And since I got rear-ended last week and my bike is trashed (with less than 2000 km's on the clock) I may be in the market for one!

Wow, for Canadian prices thats an amazing deal considering people ask about that much for a 2-3 year old used one around here.  (http://www.autotrader.ca/result/AdFrameless.aspx?id=2991260)  I paid ~1000 more for my new '09 in March and I thought I got a good deal.  Sure makes the used prices bottom out ...

That's the problem.  A week before my crash I went in to see about trading my '09 on a 2010 GSX 650F and they'd only give me $3K trade-in because the new 500's are now so cheap.  I eventually got them up to $3500, but it was still too big a jump to the 650.

WOW!  That seems like a great trade in for an '09........what price could they possibly resell it for ?  I certainly would not buy a used 09 for $4000 if I could get a new one for $4300........

But........what did they want for the new 650 ?     maybe making up the difference in that price.?........

I worked for a car dealer for a shot while.........here's the game........its called the price triangle.....

New vehicle price.........trade in price............finance price........

They simply jockey around these three prices until the customer seems to like the deal.

If the customer wants a lot for his trade in....they say sure....and then raise the cost of the new vehicle..........if the customer complains about the new vehicle cost...they say fine....and come up with higher financing cost.........Ia a customer want a certain monthly payment...they just lower the trade in............goes round and round!

Also know... at least in Aust... the Dealer gets Floor Terms. That is, they owe Nothing on the bike for 90 days. If it hasn't sold in 90 days they then owe Interest on it.

AND... when they trade they know Beforehand how much they will get for the bike - some just off them right away to a Wholesaler or Auction House

AND... depending on what you buy, the Size of the trade-in will also vary as the Higher Priced thing you're buying gives them more Wiggle Room.

AND... though a salesman might not know or it is told "no, it doesn't happen" by the boss, the Factory does offer Bonuses for sales.

So even if you see you got the bike for Below "Dealer Invoice" and you Think, "Ha, I screwed them" they Still made money.

Try this...

Get a trade price... or sell to them outright price.
Get a price on a Cash Sale of a bike.
Now ask them to deduct the Trade Price from the Cash Sale price. They won't do it. If they do, the prices they gave you were "just in case you pulled this stunt" prices.

You see a bike for sale for... let's called it $10k for ease.

You go in with your Generic Brand and want to do a deal.

A few number crunches and check with the boss later, you are informed, the trade in value is $3k. The changeover price is therefore $7k. Cool. You got it for $7k. Screwed them, right?

WRONG!

The $3k they offered you for your bike is what the wholesaler or auction house just told them they would buy it for.

They got Full Price for the bike you just bought.

And, even if they don't off the bike to someone else and instead put the bike in their lot... they didn't Pay for your bike out of their pocket. Even if they had no profit $ in the $7k price, they financed the $3k difference at Interest Only. So the most your bike will actually cost them is a month or two of interest. At 10% on the $3k over 12 months, they're looking at $300 interest. Monthly, that's twenty five bucks. So even if they then sell it on for the $3k you think you got, in the end they got Full Price for the bike you bought and More than $3k for your bike as the next person probably bought on finance.

Like twocool said, they just juggle the numbers around until you Feel it's a win. But They Win no matter the numbers.

Yet another dealer told me today, no more GS 500F.  Get 'em while you can.  They have 2010 on the Suzuki Canada website, but no 2011, though they have 2011 for other models...

We'll see.  You realize that almost none of the bikes had 2010 models, but they weren't discontinued.

2010's weren't sent to the states because the economy tanked and they couldn't sell all their 2009's, but Canada and other parts of the world got 2010's.  But apparently we're not getting 11's.

mister

Just checked Global Suzuki and their 2010 model list has the same GS500 as their 2009 model list. Hmmm...

I cannot see Suzuki just canning the GS500. I know, with the EU emissions and all that. But you just don't stop making a bike which tops its sales category. It doesn't make sense. At least, not before there is something to replace it.
