Just a little laid up for a few days after having my achilles tendon repaired yesterday. They had to use a graft to make a good repair so now I'm part dead person! (Many thanks to the person with the organ donor card.) Will be back in the gym in 2 weeks or less. Riding is probably 6 weeks away. Got a great sports doctor who is working to get me back going. I did see other typical ortho doctors who said 6 to 8 weeks on your butt because "that's the way we do it" and wouldn't even answer questions.

My doctor at University of Washington Sports Clinic had a page of questions from me and went over every one in detail. He knows how to get athletes back on their feet as quickly as possible. Not a typical HMO "cutter" paid by insurance companies.

(Yes, that is an adidas pilow, shirt, shorts and even glasses. Leg splint by University of Washington Sports Medicine Clinic.)

skirecs

thats just a flesh wound

if you can go to the gym im sure you can flick a little lever an inch up or down

adidasguy

I wish only a flesh wound.
Will have a boot on 2 weeks. Will be able to do upper body work.
Sewing ends of a tendon together with a graft is a bit much.
Not until I get a more flexible boot will I be able to ride. But we'll see. Depends on how fast the skin and graft heal.

I did get the good "happy pills" and no, the extras are not for sale.

So you have a bit of someone else inside you now?

Does that mean you now need to be on immune suppression drugs?

I usually don't start riding regularly until March and then it's with a bike that has full frontal protection, being cold and wet sucks all the fun out of it.

No. Tendon grafts are very common and have been done for a long time. Tendons, when processed for a graft,  are just "stuff" with no cells or DNA. Similar to a bone graft, which is just calcium stuff. Thanks for asking. The doctor explained it all to me and there was nothing to worry about except a 1 in a million chance of infection, par for surgery.

Ahhh, come on you wimp! I had a partial menisectomy and clean out of a lot of clutter in my knee on the 21st of Dec. I was back to riding six days later. I start PT on my knee this week. nah, listen to the doc mine had a few words to say to me this week but fell silent when I told him if he wanted me off my bike bad enough he would pay the gas in my car. Still two more weeks off of work though. I gotta have rotor cuff surgery soon too right now it is scheduled for 3-5 but if there is a cancellation sooner. YAY me!

If you are anything like me though it actually hurt less to ride the bike than to drive the car. When I tore three ligaments on my ankle that occured I primarly braked with the front and used the left leg for balancing. I strapped a cane to my bike for walking when I got off the bike. Everyone shook their head but it helped me.

Least you will be able to spend more time trawling eBay for us to find all those GS goodies  :thumb:

I reckon you could still swing that over a motorbike. Is it still classed as resting sitting on a footpeg?  :dunno_black:

If right leg, could operate a brake. Being the left leg - just a bit hard to shift until it gets switched to a smaller boot. But I can drive a car.

I remember JB848 has lots of spare time to spend on the message board. Maybe I should read his past postings and take lessons on what to do with my spare time,. :bs:

It was a complete break of the achillies tendon - a very important tendon in the foot - that thick tendon on the back of your ankle. You know - the one that keeps you from falling forward and connects the heel to your calf muscle. Kinda serious. So recovery will be a while. Fortunately I have a doctor that treats the UW sports teams so I'm in good hands.

I appreciate the support and all the ribbing about it. S**t happens - its all in how you deal with it. When healed, I'll be more man than I am now - probably about 1.00006 if that's the right amount a tendon graft amounts to. I have dead people in me :icon_lol:

And ebay is my friend!  :kiss3:

Mary: What about a handicap sticker for a bike? I'm amazed to see a big ars monster truck at Home Depot with a handicap plate. Must be mental handicap  :icon_rolleyes:

Just as long as you can do this after your graph  ;)

Handicap motorcycle plate  :D

And yes I can assure it is real cause that is my plate LOL!

Think I'm gonna have to head to the surgeon tomorrow. I broke out in a rash around both incision sights. They are warm to the touch and one has a lump underneath. I don't have time for this!

Update: Splint off and now a plastic boot with heel raisers. (Tuesday) Doctor said to wean off of crutches by the 1st. Well, I weaned myself off in 2 days. Now I just gimp along with the left leg in the high boot. Back at the gym for a while every day. That seems to help the most - gets my circulation going to get more fresh blood to the injured ankle.

Now I need to do easy stretching in the evening to get the calf muscle to stretch out again.

Main concern is the incision because the skin is so thin at the ankle. Dr. is less worried about the tendon - they're pretty tough.

I'm glad I've got the same doctor that treats these problems with the Huskies' football, basketball and track athletes.

(Got yelled at for using my stitches as my avatar. Full gross-out leg photo is on my photobucket page. Dr's assistants thought it fun to take photos. After all - it is the back of the leg and I can't see that too well. Go there and search for adidasguy or follow a link from one of my photos. Now go and gross yourself out!)

Well, at least your chest doesn't look like this! It hurts like hell and the doc said either I can wait a week or so and see if my body can fight it or have the surgery now.

WARNING not a pretty pic!

That is as close as you guys get to seeing my boobie!

Should I add a poll for the best gross out?

( PS: Noticed Tard farm is locked out - can't start new threads there. Gross out body parts would be a cool one! )
