2002 bodywork on a 1998?

Found a good deal on the tail fairings and tank from an 02 GS500 on ebay and would love to upgrade my bike to the new body style since I need a tank and tail anyway. I know I will need to buy a tail light, seat and tank mount to work with the new bodystyle, however the question I have is will the new tail fairing mount on my bikes rear with the stock mounts or will I need to do some fabrication to make it work?

Anyone who knows, let me know please. My tax return is going to get my bike looking good and handling/stopping better.

I am pretty sure the tank and seat are no problem, don't know about the tail plastics though. I'm sure it's been done, and if you have enough time and resources anything can be done. You could make it a Ninja if you wanted.

Try dropping down to 4 Oreos and set your pilot screw 3 turns out.

Hmm... I think Ill go ahead and pull the trigger on this set then if its still available in a couple weeks. I can make the tail section mount as long as the seat and tank go on.

I know the tank will go with little, if any work at all. There are plenty of people using them, and for some reason most don't update the seat as well so it looks funky . . . but anywho . . . .

Tail plastics are not compatible.
You will have to make your own modifications to get them on.
Others have done it so maybe one of those people can tell you how to do it.
Tanks are available for the 89-2000 models.
Tail plastics in all colors are also available (I know, my garage is full of them).
Given the work involved getting the tail and seat to fit, you might spend a couple dollars more  or look around a little longer, and get the correct parts for your bike that you can put on with no modifications.

I thought you bought all of the GS500 Parts Adidas :flipoff:
But, yeah what he said unless you are wanting to make a project of it for fun then yeah change it up but if your doing that I'd do like TTfour did. I luv that R1 tail!

I don't have all the parts. You still have one left mirror

If you're going to do all the work to change the tail, then I agree with goofy that you should do something really special like an R1 tail.

Otherwise, there are good deals on this board for tanks and lord knows (no, I don't think he's counted them either) how many tail sets I have for the "E" style.

You can do like I did with Junior and make one really cool looking "E".
I've got enough left overs to do a couple more bikes in different styles.

A couple variations

jeffdodge

I guess that IS a possibility. I think the trick is going to be finding a decent tank for a good price. I want to go with the stock style of either my year or an 01 plus. How much would you want for a set (the left right and center)?

Gs/Gl500

I have a 2002+ seat, and need an earlier seat. Its in good shape, but could use a cleaning (will probably clean it myself first) and has a tiny rip near the front.

If your interested let me know.

I actually got ahold of a flawless 2002 seat for dirt cheap locally today, so Ill be buying the parts and doing the swap. I'm sure its not too hard to get those rear plastics mounted on my frame, plus with the way the winter is looking I'll have plenty more downtime before I can start riding this year...  :bs:

Tax returns were good to me this year, so Ill be ordering lots of parts when I get my return in a couple weeks.

The plan is for new brake pads front and rear, full fork rebuild with progressive springs, 2002 bodywork, mirrors to replace my broken bar end mirrors, the black plastic cover for the gauges, as well as new rubber dampers for the gauges then on top of that IF money allows, new Galfer wave rotors & either clipons OR maybe some suburban machinery bars.

Hey Adidas on Junior what is that fin that is below the swingarm. Did that come with the custom chain guard which is nice BTW. I think it would be the shiznit if I could get it with "flick" on it!

It is called a "Toe Guard". I guess for racing so if you drag your toe, you don't get into the sprockets. I find it an extra bit of safety when cleaning and oiling the chain. If I rotate the rear wheel backwards, it will prevent the hand from accidentally. getting pulled into the sprocket.

Got extra stainless chain guard. Was going to put on Suzi but since her frame is black, I'll stay with the black plastic one.

Those wanting tail sets for "E", price varies with condition. Need to know what ones you want or if you want "painters". (None are missing tabs nor are any cracked). Point me to pix's of what you'd like and I'll see if I have it or something similar.

Junior is a great looking bike, I just have to wonder; why is the fender still there?

Because I like it there.

I am a fan of the rear hugger myself. It helps keep things clean

Ended up using bodywork from an 06. Brackets for the rear were easily made from some small L brackets we had laying around the garage. Tank worked flawlessly. Since I have had this bike it has been largely upgraded with Bridgestone Battleaxe tires, Sonic Springs fork springs, wave rotors, EBC HH pads, and most recently the bodywork. I have to do the fender still, but thats a minor concern (and a huge pain in the butt, since the front tire has to be pulled to do so) and hopefully find some paint that matches the stock frame color to touch it up, then its done and ready for this season.

This is the same bike, a few months back.

This is the bike now.

For me the 98 loks more god.. it just needed nice paint, bar end mirrors, nice turn signals and some new exhaust
Its just my opinion..  ;)

jeffdodge

I prefer the new bodystyle personally. Still needs exhaust, but I cant see spending $400 for only a couple horse. If my stock 98 tank was not leaking, I would have just picked up some tail plastics.
