I just picked up a 2008 GS500f and am wondering which service manual to go with. I've heard good things about the Clymer manual but I doesn't seem to go past 2002. I also saw the Haynes manual on Amazon, a bit pricey though. Is there anything useful (for a bike newbie) in .pdf?

I have an '04, and used the '89-'02 manual just fine. The bike hasn't hardly changed over it's 20 some odd year production life. You'll be fine to use the older manuals.

Haynes covers 2008. Though older copies are still being sold.
There were a few changes after 2004 but they are minor. Still handy to have the newest book so you have the correct electrical diagram. It is color coded to match the real wires. That helps a lot in tracing things.

Recent changes were throttle position sensor. Neutral switch also has sensor for 1st and 2nd gears that go to the ignition control unit. I suspect it adjusts the timing for 1st and 2nd. Mechanically I don't believe anything changed after 2004.
We do not have a passing switch. Otherwise, the colors match the wire colors on the GS.

Thanks for the tips, I'll start looking for cheap/used copies of the Hayes manual.

Thanks for the lead, birdhandler. I downloaded the manual, looks very informative! That looks like a good website, gotta wonder why Google doesn't list them when you search for "GS500 service manual pdf"  :icon_rolleyes: do you order parts from Partshark?

Also still interested in the Hayes manual, Mary  :D

I'll try to get it uploaded somewhere this weekend. The old laptop where I had it stored has a black screen popping up saying I need to install a missing file so I'll have to figure that out before I can upload it!

Alas I live in New Zealand and the freight costs from the the good old US of A are ridiculous unfortunately, its an otherwise small downside of living here.

Definitely go with Haynes.  I'm sure the Clymer's really good too, but Haynes has a lot of tid bits for the newer model that you won't find in Clymer.
Good day to you!

I've heard the moderators steal $5.00 from JB848 for each forum member who goes to that site. Seems like some sort of conspiracy to me.

Take your time, I'm still figuring out the basics like changing the air filter and adjusting the rear suspension, so I won't be advanced enough to need the Hayes for some time. And please don't go to too much trouble for my sake--I really appreciate your efforts though!  :icon_mrgreen:
