Yup, seems that gas prices are likely to be a big issue again this year.

Not the most efficient car around, but very cool...and talk about a rev happy engine...

I always had a soft spot for the Nissan 280ZX...sorry, I don't have any pics right now...but what is wrong with the Civic Si?  I know, everyone has one, but they are a great car that is a lot of fun to drive...

I think I've gotta buy a truck. I'll probably start looking into it around fall. Hate to do it because I live in the city and have made it thus far without owning a car, but with 2 dogs and my desire to pick up some beat up bikes for projects, as well as general house projects, I think it's gonna be time for me to find something.

Last October I bought a 4-cylinder, 2-wheel drive, 1999 Ford Ranger for $3 grand cash, including tax, for the expressed purpose of commuting in winter and transporting my bike or other things when needed.  Best move I've made in years.  When you ride a bike it makes total sense to get a truck of some sort.  Cars lack utility, unless you can find an El Camino and they don't carry much but they will carry a bike.  I moved in November and it cost me nothing but sweat and a few gallons of gas to move.  4,000 miles later the truck has been utterly reliable.  Knock wood.  I chose the Ranger due to its low cost, plentiful parts, and reliability record. (sounds like a GS 500, doesn't it?)

How about a VW Golf?  Not exactly a coupe, but it's a hatchback and I have one.  So, that's all that really matters.

I had a 91 Camaro.  It was a piece of crap.  Shortly after buying it both the engine and tranny went up.  With a sports car (or bike) the previous owner most likely dogged it.  I would buy an economical car that is good on gas (Anyone see those gas prices?) and relatively simple to fix.

I've had a few requirements that has made the choice difficult. The 3 things I needed were:

1) Hauling- motorcycles, drywall, etc...
2) room for two 65lb dogs
3) on the smaller side because I live in the city

Having 2 of those requirements would be easy, but all 3 together are tough. The one I had to budge on was size. I'd love an el camino if it wasn't for needing room for dogs. A normal small car would be great if it wasn't for hauling stuff. If I had little dogs I could get a small extended cab ranger and just pick up the dog with 1 hand and stick him behind the seats. With the size of my dogs I'll need an actual door to the back seat. Don't think I need a full 4 door truck, I'm hoping to find one with the 'access cab' where you open the front door, then there's a smaller back door that opens in the reverse direction. Stupid dogs are gonna cost me a fortune haha. I never drive though. It'll be ridiculously rare though, so I don't mind spending a little more and getting a truck that'll literally last me 30 years.

Oh yea an el camino ... yea, it has the added benifit of being theft proof. It also can serve duty as a hearse.
Cool.

Dude...come on; they're DOGS.  That's what pickup truck beds are made for.  Dogs love trucks.  Throw 'em in the back!
I have a 2001 GMC Sonoma (standard cab), and it meets ALL of your requirements.  Small, good mileage, and hauls my bike and my 80-lb Ridgeback all over the place.

If I had a cap on the bed I'd let the dogs hang out in there. I just wouldn't have any way to get the cap off by myself, or anywhere to really keep it once it was off. Downsides of city living. Plus, I think they'd be less than pleased if it was winter or raining, haha

Not to answer your question, but I bought '99 Opel Astra 2,0 Sport last fall as a "winter car" for 2200€. It's a 3d hatch and tuned with KW suspension by previous owner. It has 100kW of power and does a 32mpg(US). I think they'd sold it as a Chevrolet in US. Anyway, its a good secondary vechile for me. I like the looks and it's quite cheap to maintain.

I think we only got that car here for one or maybe two model years...it was imported under the Saturn brand by GM...the Saturn Astra was a nice car, but it wasn't a sales hit...in Canada the sport hatch back sells, but in the States the preference is for a coupe or sedan...and we are used to the small cars being cheap, so the price was higher than people were used to paying for a small car...not expensive, but more than others in the class...my neighbour has one, an XR model (sporty one) with the polished rims and tinted windows...quite a sporty looking car...but it will be a rare one here...

I would check out the sportier import cars...Honda Civic Si, Honda Prelude, Nissan Sentra SE-R, Subaru Impreza WRX, Toyota Celica...they will all be quicker than the V6 Camaro or Mustangs that will come up in your budget and will used much less fuel (and probably last longer)
