96 GS died randomly while riding

Had the strangest experience today. After months and months of saving money, I finally had my friends help me rebuild my gs after sustaining drop damage on the right side. When I took her home from the shop, it ran fine, and was just like I remember. I was on an hour ride today, and I had to pull over to tighten the bolt that holds my exhaust canister on. After I started back up and pulled into second gear, something happened, and I lost all power. The engine didn't just shut off, All electrical on the bike died.

I checked the usual: make sure the key is on ON, and its not loose or has a bad connection that would cause it to close the circuit, switch was on run.. battery terminals connected properly, ect.


I sat on the side of the road for an hour trying to figure this out while my buddy rode back to my house to pick up my truck to take it home. I am trying to get an idea where to start, instead of blindly troubleshooting wires.

Firstly, could there be a fuse that regulates power for the entire bike? Also, could a ground vibrating loose somewhere cause this kind of issue? Turning the key gives no headlight or any other indicator light.

I'll break out the multimeter and wiring diagram if I know where to start or what might be the culprit.

There is a fuse box located on the right hand side under the seat behind the right rear fairing.

And the fuse that is in the rubber cover is your spare. The one you want to check/replace is the one in the red socket.

Drop on right side? lots - if not most - of wiring on the right side.
Tightened up things then it dies?
You've got bad wiring. Open things up and check for pinched wires or bad insulation or bad battery connection.
Going from 1st to 2nd is just a coincidence, unless your neutral wire shorted out and blew your fuse. Could be the brake wiring, too as that's near where you tighten the exhaust.

hi, have a look at the 4 pin socket going to the main fuse, my bikes electrics kept cutting out while riding and I found dirt in the contacts, after cleaning and making the connection secure it runs a lot better.

Pop the three bolts on the ignition cover on the RHS, and take a look under there. Perhaps the ignition rotor bolt came out (best case) or snapped (worst case) and the ignition shorted everything out?
