Worth an upgrade to a new GS?

So I was pondering today while at work with nothing to do. Would it be worth returning my 2000 GS with 11500 miles back to stock and trading up to a Brand new 2009 since suzuki is running a $1000 rebate and 1.99% financing for 5 years? Im pretty sure I would only owe about $1800 after the trade in over 5 yrs at almost no interest.

I am only at about 6 month of riding since I started in June and took the winter off so I was not planning on upgrading to a different bike anytime soon.

you would get the new plastics and better emissions control if you are into either of those.  When you go to the stealership you always spend more than you think you will though.  you also end up with new tires and brake pads as well as any other wear items.  The new plastics are pretty cool looking, but if you drop it they get scraped.  Depends on what you want to do with it.  For showing off the plastics make it look more like the bigger cool bikes, and the fairing might make some difference with the wind blast.  I have never tried the older style gs though.  All the guts are  pretty much the same.

No way that's a raw deal, stick with the bike your already getting to know then think about it. Chances are your gonna want a bigger bike, and keeping your current GS available to you later on is a great asset for going on those long rides and getting yourself some great gas mileage compared to the bigger 1000 Sports bike. But if your thinking of just getting a bigger bike, look into the Suzuki SV1000. Great ride of a bike for a 1000 and has wicked gas mileage. Downfall though it doesn't have much top end speed as say a R1 or ZX10 but still it is a 1000 after all.

i would also say no. you're going to be spending more money for basically the same thing. maybe if you said trade up for a sv650 or so...

Why oh why would anyone go into any amount of debt over a GS?  Get a better bike if you wanna spend money.
Good day to you!

it doesn't seem like it would be a really good or bad deal either way. paying 1800 over five years w/ little to no interest isn't bad at all. plus you'll get a new bike w/ less miles, warrenty, oil cooler and fairings.

or instead of making payments you could put that money in savings. then a few years down the road when the gs starts getting a bit more worn, use the savings to go scoop something shinny new

i agree, not good to get flipped upside down on a loan, but for me in my situation, the GS Is the better bike. only thing that would make me even happier is some fuel injection.

Keep what you have.

Then when you think you want to "upgrade" to another bike, keep the GS for comparison.  Then sell the one you don't want/like.  It is better to have than to not have.

I've owned mine for 9 years now, and never get tired of it (and have been riding 24+yrs).  Every bike is different.  Even the same model.

A lot of financing companies won't even finance that little amount of money. When I bought a bike in 2003 I had most of the money and just wanted to finance the last $2k and they wouldn't do it. I had to finance $5k, and planned on just sending them $3k with my first payment. I blew that money so fast you wouldn't believe it hahaha

mass- hole,

what do you want to do???  :dunno_black:

there's gotta be a reason you are thinking about it, I'd saY go for it.

like others have said, if it was me I'd spend the extra $2K and get the SV650.

and this is coming from a guy that just bought a new 09 GSF ($3200) wishing I would have bought the SV

BTW the SV should only be $6K

Really its just to get the fairing, the bigger tank and newer styling and any other minor upgrades that came along with it(carbs, oil cooler, etc). Nothing absolutely necessary, nor is my current bike in bad shape or anything. I suppose I could look for a super low miles used 2009 and be getting a better deal. Im sure its not actually worth it in the long run, just figured with the $1000 rebates and low financing I could get a decent deal and be on a brand new bike that will resale better when I do decide to sell in the future.

At this point I am not looking at anything bigger/faster, I ride winding back roads to and from work and avoid the highways at all cost because of the wind and cause so many stupid people change lanes without looking or signalling. I figure the fairing may make the highway more enjoyable.

Very wrong my friend when it comes to hoping that adding a fairing will make highway driving more enjoyable. You`ll catch more cross wind with a fairing and you can't improve whether people see you or not. Its depends on if they are aware you are around and you yourself are making it aware to them that you are around. And sometimes people are just ass's and refuse to respect motorcyclist.

What I did was sell my 90 GS with 21k on it for 1200, then went out and got an 05 GS500F with 4k on it for 1800. 600 out of the pocket for 17k less miles, an oil cooler, better aesthetics, and less problems. Then I went naked and sold my fairings to make up for some of the difference too.

But other than that, I wouldn't suggest it. Stick with your GS till you get all the technique down, then go bigger if you want  :thumb: If you maintain your '00 properly then it'll be running like new anyways.

Opinions differ, but I prefer a bike with a fairing when riding on the highway. Or at least a windscreen. This is what I added to my gs500e when I had one (I have an 'F' now). Maybe adding a windscreen will get you what you are looking for.

Use your bike to either trade in and get some cash or turn it into a street fighter but it sounds to me like you want this new bike, so I say go for it.

Not sure about your area but the dealerships around here tack on a $600-$700 set up/delivery fee on top of the price.  That would negate the majority of the Suzuki discount for me.

The new bike May sell for more later - but - it is costing you more upfront. So you don't win on that front. The longer you keep the new bike the less the gap between resale compared to the older bike.

As for warranty... do all your own services on this New bike and your warranty won't really be worth squat - prob not worth squat anyway, like how much will go wrong in 2 years with the low mileage most people do. So factor in Dealer/Mechanic servicing if you want to keep your warranty.

Good chance your insurance on the newer bike will be more, cause it's worth more. Consider that.

Read the fine print of low interest. Often it's really only small like 2% for six months and then crazy high for the remainder with no ability to pay it out early without penalty. If the difference is only $1800, why not just fork it out instead of borrowing it? Then you Own the bike and don't need to bow down to any finance company.

If you plan on keeping the GS - gsJack style - then the only difference is how many years will you get out of the bike. At 10,000 clicks a year done (for example) you've got roughly 9 more years on your current bike or 10 on a new one.

Ultimately, you do what you want. I'm just tossing out things you may not have thought of.

Before I found my 92, I was calling dealerships in Maryland, DC, Virginia, Delaware, and New Jersey. No one could get a single GS500 in and they were all sold out. People around here are asking over $3,500 for their 4 and 5 year old bikes.

So the question might not be WILL you buy a new bike... it might be CAN you find a bike!
