530 to 520 chain conversion help

Started some work on the GS425. I have a brand new 520 EK chain and would like to use it on this bike but the GS425 runs a 530 chain.

I looked on the JT sprocket site and got the part number and mesaurements for the stock front and back sprockets:
http://www.jtsprockets.com/52.0.html?&L=0&sel_uid=5619&p=

They did not provide the width measurement for the front sprocket.

I then did a search on 'conversion' and found that the GSX-R600 has all the same mesaurements and also the width mesaurement for the front sprocket.

Is there any easy way to figure out whether the GSX sprocket will fit without removing the GS425 sprocket to take width measurements or any easier process to doing a 530 to 520 conversion?

I think I figured it out. I found out that the GS550E/L and the GS425 have the same front sprocket. So I did a search and ebay for '520 conversion' and found this..

530's last a lot longer seamax, of course 520's send more power to the rear wheel especially when they are new and well maintained. Or, rather in like condition to 530, except 530's wear slower and hence with the same type of use and maintenance they are likely to be in better shape.

I'd do a 530 on a GS if I could, but that front sproket needs to be turned down in the center and that is a hard job cos it would be hardened steel you'd be trying to machine through.

That much work, I might as well do belt ... and dont even get me started on the belt conversion.

Cool.

I just want to do the conversion because the 425 needs a new chain and sprockets. I have a new 520 chain and thought it might be cheaper to get converted 520 sprockets instead of buying a new 530 sprockets with a new 530 chain. I really don't care about performance or weight. I'm trying to save money on this build.

I guess it could be cheaper.

Definitely, just got a confirmation from ZR1 that the GS425 uses the same sprockets as the 89-91 GSX-600F Katana and they make 520 conversion sprockets for that model. Front and rear sprocket ~$40.  :thumb:

i had used my rotary tool. a foredom with a foot control ( and 1hp motor) to modify one of my gs' front sprockets. that i wouldnt recommend. if you can find a proper sprocket. id go that route. on another note i wonder if mak still has that army bike he painted?
