OK, so I recently purchased an 08 GS with 1600 miles on it. Wasn't planning on doing anything with the tires since they're basically new at that mileage. However I've been hearing a lot of talk abou tire age in years as well, rather than miles. My question is, at what point is a tire too old to be used, regardless of mileage? I was originally planning on swapping them out next season, and I assume this is still safe, but I'm wondering how long I can keep with these.

Thanks

depends on the tread and condition of the rubber (dry rot).  tread is self explanatory. check for dry rot by inspect the surfaces of the tires; if you see crack, pits, or defects replace the tire.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I was wondering the same thing also.

I have a 2008 GS bought brand new,so the tires are 3 years old but with only 100 miles on them.
I've asked an opinion from two MSF instructors wether they should be replaced but have got conflicting answers as one says they should be replaced if there 3 years old and another says if they were stored inside a heated building and there no cracks they should be OK.They don't have any cracks and have a spongy feel to the tread if pressing a fingernail into them.

After 5 years, toss them regardless of miles, wear or visual condition.

3-5 years. Throw. I check them if they last 3 years for condition and usually chuck them at this point. I changed my bikes tyres at the 3 year mark as they were getting close to worn and didn't look as healthy as they should. Normally though my tyres don't last that long though, on any of my cars or bikes.
Having said that my box trailer has tyres on it that are about 10 years old. Hard as bricks.
