Random hose connections?

Popped my tank off today since it started leaking out the PO's patch. Saw these two hoses that weren't actually attached to anything, I don't think it's really affecting anything but that bottom circle kind of worries me.
Would be greatly appreciated if anyone could offer up some clues as to what they are for.

Thanks :)

the bottem fitting you have circled went to the airbox, it took the fumes from the top of the float chamber into the airbox so nothing leaked to atmosphere .the top hose used to have a small foam filter on it ,this hose allows air iinto top of carb to assist the spring to push diaphram down quickly ,this is why it is a large diamiter

Top circle goes to the air box.It is the crank case vent.If you don't have an air box, get a K&N filter for it.The bottom circle is the carb vent and it needs a hose ran from it down under the bike behind the left rear set.

Here is my crank case filter K&N 62-1320.I used cheap brake booster vacuum line to connect it.Be sure the tank don't squash it shut.

Actually, they're both carb vents.  The bottom one I think is the atmosphere reference, and the top one is, well, I have a whole other thread about the top one.  But yeah, there most certainly needs to be a filter on that hose in the top circle - I'm thinking air gets sucked in there and into the carbs and engine.  The bottom one needs a hose bringing it the hell away from the carbs - it provides an atmospheric pressure reference so it absolutely needs to be away from any kind of turbulence.

God knows what the deal is with his crank case breather - it's not even in the picture.

Now the real question is what year is that bike?  Those are '04+ carbs, but that ain't an '04+ frame.

Oh and thanks for this part number - I need a filter for my breather as I've been running it open for a long time now  :o.  How long have you had it on there?  Does it get nasty dirty after a while?

It's a 1990 EL. Guess I'll need to hunt down some cable. And what's the crank case breather?

frame is pre 04 maybe even pre 02.

After looking over the pics again,I believe that top hose needs to be plugged off to stop a vacuum leak or maybe it needs vacuum going to it.Here's the diagram.

My carbs have those same 2 hoses, and my upper hose has a filter on it that I assume is stock (I bought my GS used). Here's a pic of mine with the filter:

It is a filter and not a plug--I was wondering about this when I was having vacuum issues, but once I got the routing figured out the bike ran fine with this filter in place. You can't see from the pic, but there's a bit of yellow foam inside that black plastic filter connected to the end of the hose. The foam on mine has a bunch of black grunge on it, so I'm guessing it's something you'd want to have there.

Ben, would that K&N filter you mentioned attach to this hose? If so I may replace the stock filter with it. In any case, I have no idea what this part does.

Good point, I think you're right - it should be blocked off.  I see he lacks the rest of the '04+ equipment so I suspect this hose does nothing now.  Don't think vacuum would work - I'd be worried it'd suck the slide wide open.

So try plugging the top hose with a bolt and see if runs any differently.  I don't think it will.  If it runs the same or better, remove the hose and get a more appropriate plug for its barb.  In any case, consider yourself lucky, you have upgraded carbs.

I wonder if you can swap the top covers with a pair of plastic covers from an earlier set of carbs.

The bottom barb still needs a hose routing it to a cozy location.

And what's the crank case breather?
There's a plate on the top center of your valve cover with a hose barb, and hopefully a hose with a filter on it like on ben2go's bike above.  This allows gases that have blown past the piston rings and into the crank case to escape.  Without it, pressure would build up in the crankcase and you'd leak oil everywhere as it blew past the various engine seals.  On a stock machine, this goes into the air box where it is sucked back into carbs and ran through the engine again.    For us naughty boys and girls, it just gets dumped in the atmosphere.

Yeah, you definitely have an entire '04+ GS500, and thus have all the other equipment to use this hose and filter.  If it's really dirty, I see no reason not to try the filter Ben is using for his breather.  I would hold on to current filter just in case the new one causes any odd problems.

I'm fairly sure this hose is unused on Wrightboy's GS since he lacks most of the vacuum system and electronics that you have.

You need the vacuum damper if you're keeping the emissions crap.It retains some vacuum to help the system maintain a steady vacuum.I'm not 100% sure how this effects the carbs. If I had a set of 06+ carbs to disassemble,I could find out how to eliminate the emissions crap.I'm hoping someone will send me theirs and I can eliminate the emissions crap and do a write up.

Where exactly is the emissions crap? I can vaguely remember the PO saying something about this, I think he removed it?
Will try plugging that hose when I get a tank again though and see what the result it.

Also, LimaXray...went back out and I think I see the issue with the crank case breather. :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:

I'm genuinly shocked i'm not having terrible issues with the bike considering all that it's missing. Appeared to me to be running great after the jet cleared out.

Emissions crap looks like it was mostly removed. That port will need a hose and filter like I posted above. The port is open to the inside of the engine. So dirt can get in and wreck the engine.

Alright...so try and plug the big hose, route that tiny lower hole somewhere safe, and then a hose/filter for the crank breather.

Anyone have a favorite online shop for hoses and filters?

Thanks,

I get my hoses at assvanced auto, except fuel hose.My breather filter came from amazon.com.Do a search and shop around for the filter prices vary widely.

Just saw this.  This is not the vacuum damper, it's an air filter.  The vacuum damper is mounted to the forward part of the frame, above the valve cover.  And this applies to '04+, my '05 has (had) all of this equipment.

Haha, I actually googled "assvanced" when he first posted thinking what an awesome name that was...sadly google corrected it and pointed me to the appropriate store  :icon_lol:

LMAO!Sorry for the confusion.I am an auto mechanic and our local Advanced Auto and Auto Zone are always selling us faulty parts.Unfortunately our only good parts store,NAPA,went out of business.I don't blame the guy for closing.

Hehe, I see. They'd get my business even despite their crappy parts if they actually changed their name to Assvanced Auto.  :icon_lol:
