There is so much to see in South Dakota!!  It is a lot like West Virginia but on a grander scale.  We spent Saturday spelunking at Wind Cave and Jewel Cave.  Caves are hard to photograph so I don't have many pics from there.  Yesterday we went driving around Custer State Park which was awesome!  I really wish I would have  brought a motorcycle here for that.  The speed limit is only 35mph but the roads are twisty and the scenery is amazing.  We are going to stop at the Petrified Forest this morning and then start making our way into Wyoming.  Time for breakfast.  Later

-Jessie

Pictures never do caves justice

Wind Cave had formations called "boxwork" which I had never seen before

Driving around here I've seen a bunch of restoreable '57 Chevy's and other old cars for sale relatively cheap

In the town of Custer there was a place called The Purple Pie Place.  We got a slice there one day which was so good we went back and got a whole pie the following day   :)

The purple pig out front

Custer State Park was amazing!  The northern 14 miles of Highway 87 through the park is called Needles Highway referring to the appearance of the granite columns.  There are a few tunnels cut into the stone along the way and scenic views everywhere you look.  A great area for a motorcycle ride!

At certain points you get a distant view of Mount Rushmore

The roads are very twisty and narrow in places,, you have to keep an eye out for oncoming traffic

We have been lucky and had great weather all week.  Even mornings that started out overcast became blue skies by noon   :D

There is another section in Custer State Park called the Wildlife Loop.  There you can catch a glimpse of buffalo and other critters

These donkeys are descendent's of the donkeys pioneers used as pack animals 100 years ago.  Once roads were built, the pioneers didn't need the donkeys so they turned them loose.

The wildlife wanders right across the road so you have to be careful

The other place that has a lot of restorable 40's 50's and 60's cars is the southwest, new mexico/AZ/Utah. I've seen it in person, and AZ and NM have excellent weather after a 100 years in the dirt the car will essentially be rust free.
Cool.

Cool trip. Love all the photos.

I found a great internet connection tonight!!   (Thanks Robin!)  On the way out of South Dakota we hit the Petrified Forest.  Not the coolest thing in SD but worth a look see if you are into Geology.  From there we went to The Devil's Tower in Wyoming.  I can not put into words how amazing that site is, you just have to see it for yourself to take in all the grandeur!  Then we were back on the road for a long haul across Montana.  Next on the agenda: Glacier National Park!

-Jessie

Petrified Forest.  Looks like wood, feels like a rock   ;)

Geologist say that the way the fallen palm trees are broken into section is evidence that the Black Hills were once flat swamp land that dried and was forced upward over time.

A petrified wood pile

You can see the Devil's Tower miles before you actually reach it

This thing was spectacular in person!  There is a paved trail that circles the entire tower

If I hadn't been the one to take this picture I would swear that it was Photoshopped

These are all pieces that have eroded off the tower over time

This site is sacred to the Lakota and other Native Americans in the area.  Religious offerings can be seen in many places around the tower

As we drove away I kept looking in the rear view mirror to catch another glimpse

Then we were back on the road crossing into Montana.  I now know why it is referred to as "big sky country"

We passed a lot of wind farms

Gas out here is available in different octanes than I'm used to.  I was cheap and used the low grade, no pinging so far...

As we got closer to the west end of Montana the land started looking more mountainous

We set up camp for the night just outside of Glacier National Park

I am thoroughly impressed with your pics. Keep them coming.

If I remember correctly, devil's tower was formed by a big ass bear trying to eat an indian a long time ago.

We made our way through Glacier National Park in Montana.  It was spectacular!!  Snow capped mountains, scenic valleys and more waterfalls than you can shake a stick at!  We drove Going To The Sun Road which is billed as the most scenic road in America.  It definitely lives up to the hype   :thumb:  There was construction at weeping wall so we didn't get to stop and photograph it but we did get to drive along it.  Next up is Yellowstone.

-Jessie

The road leading into the park

It was windy the day we were there so the lake was a bit choppy

The glaciers create what is called "rock flour."  The rock flour is carried by the melted snow into the rivers and the lakes.  When the sun hits the flour in the water it reflects different hues.  The day we were there the water had a brilliant turquoise color.  My camera had trouble catching the true brilliance of the water.  I can only compare it to the dyed water you see in fountains sometimes.

It is a bit hard to make out in this pic but there is a rainbow over the water

WARNING: Your car will be crushed by rocks

There are waterfalls and white water everywhere you look at this park

This guy from Indiana lost his footing on the rocks and got a real close up view of the turquoise water  ;)

We hiked up one of the waterfalls to a hidden lake on the mountain

We passed this crazy looking tree along the way

Now were back on the road through Montana to Yellowstone

I Am not on your route, but do wish you well.
I can say that if you are close to Iowa just stay away. Iowa sucks and there is nothing here to see or do that is memorable just skip on past it.
Make sure you post up pics.

I had to laugh out loud.
Man I love this forum. You just cant make this stuff up. It too real.

Nice retort pookie. I like your style.  :thumb:
