I know the original teeth are 14/39 right? But why do some people change out the front and rear to different teeth like 15 or 45? What are the advantages?

I assume more teeth mean climbing the RPMs faster? I.E. speed up faster?

Less teeth at the front = Quicker acceleration, lower top end (Lower Ratio)
More teeth at the front = Slower acceleration, higher top end (Higher ratio)

Less teeth at the rear = Slower acceleration, higher top end (Higher ratio)
More teeth at the rear = Quicker acceleration, lower top end (Lower Ratio)

Gotcha....thanks.

Anyone got a link for some 14/45 sprockets?

The stock front is 16 teeth not 14.

Three up on the rear is equal to one down on the front.

So by going 45 on the rear it will be like keeping the rear stock and dropping two on the front. As you already want to drop two to 14, it will be like dropping to 12 on the front. At which point your chain wear will increase, 1st gear will become useless and your top end will be non-existent. Around town only for you. Why do you want to do this? If you want a quicker bike off the line, the easiest thing to do is buy a 600 and wave goodbye to the GS - get your acceleration off the lights and still have a top end.

I'm sure there is a thread here somewhere of a guy that put a 12 on the front. Do a search for it he may have written up his results.

Yeah, just a quicker bike off the line and faster response. Not really caring about top end as Im not going to go 90+ on it anyway. Thats reckless. I went from 392s to 456s in my truck and man what a difference.

Right now though Im just reading, asking, making notes and planning. My plans change A LOT from day to day. My truck is proof of that. ;)

In the end, right now, if i were to change I would likely buy a 15 and step it down later as I get used to it.
