So I have been posting a lot of questions on the forum about random stuff that I am having to fix but never posted the pics of the bike so far...

So I bought my GS500E as my first bike and got it cheap cause it needed a lot of work...
One of the fairings was cracked into 2 pieces, but thanks to some advise and jb weld.. got it back into a single piece...

Then had the leak in my gas tank.. so more jbweld and the leak got fixed

But so far I have gotten it to this stage.. (only temp. paint job... rustoleum... going to do the real paint job in a few weeks...

Thanks to everyone at gstwin... without your help I would never have been able to get half of the stuff done...
Can't wait to buy the cast iron polish and get the pipes less rusty..

Photos?
]
You can't see the photos?
Moved all photos to imgur so should be able to be viewed if you had problems... Let me know if you still cant see them cause I can...

Also any source to replace the caps for the frame bolts?

So far I have:
Fenderectomy
Replaced the Thermal relay with an electronic flashing relay but stuck with incandescent turn signals due to voltage issues causing all LED turn signals to flash...
Replaced turn signals with short stalks.
Replaced the old 96' gauge cluster with broken manual tach with the cluster off an 04' and wired the electronic tach
Replaced the bulbs in the gauge cluster with WLED-5x Red LEDS and working with adidas to figure out the best to replace the indicator bulbs.
Had to patch the gas tank for a pinhole rust leak
JB Welded one of the fairings back into 1 piece then bondo'd any damage to the fairings and painted them with rustoleum to temporary protect them.
Bondo'd and painted the gas tank with rustoleum to prevent future rust and prep for the final paint job.
Replaced the bars with superbike bars and put on spider grips and bar ends.
Working on getting rid/hiding the rust on the frame and random components
Replaced the clutch perch with one off an 04' and bypassed the clutch switch and sidestand switch (both were non-working so easier to bypass and save a headache)
Replaced the mirrors after dropping the bike and breaking one of them

Still have to do:
Final paint + Decals (still trying to decide if i should do just a glossy enamel or a base/clear... purchased suzuki white decals to go on tank but don't have any sourced for other parts of the bike)...
Replace Gas cap with a non-keyed cap
Possibly replace front and back pegs (they are rusted and kinda bent).
Replace clutch and brake lever
Replace the spring to activate brake lights with rear brake (Still haven't found any parts that will replace the broken plastic)

Looking good there Numus.
I do have a question about the rustoleum paint, as I've actually been wanting to paint my bike with that.
What kind of prep work did you have to do? Was it fairly difficult? And how does it look in person? (looks fine in the pictures)
I want to use the black hammered paint to give it that old school look.

Actually worked out really well (except i left it in 1 spot to long and got a blotch)...
Prep was just etching primer then hit it with some 220 grit after it drys for a couple hours.. then hit it with teh first coat (very light, should still see some grey under it).. let it dry and then use some 220 grit or 400 grit.. then start layering it like that. Eventually you get the final coat.. use 600+ grit wet sand and then polish it... It has help up really well (even to some gas dripped on it).
I am not keeping it this way tho because i want to do a professional finish (base/clear).

I did my first project with rattle can and it was a first time experience.  Mine came out pretty rough but I like how it looks on my old bike.  I didn't want it to be perfect.  My second bike came out much better and I learned even more.  Hopefully my GS will come out even better.  I'm sure you've heard it is all about prep work.

Numus yours is looking good!  Can't wait to see more photos and progress!

During basic priming of the gas tank, be VERY careful to get all of the gasoline out of the tank.... it is a PITA to try to prime it when small traces of gas keep thinning out the primer... a good example of how it should NOT look is

Had to resand the entire tank and prime it again

Using the rustoleum automotive gloss enamel you can get a pretty shinny and durable finish...

I have had gas leak on this at the station and it didn't cause it to bubble or rub off... Not sure if the automotive paint is made to withstand petroelum based products

Followed adidasguy's recommendation on Rutland's Stove Polish on the exhaust pipes.. went from bright rust to black

The front of the pipes was incredibly rusted so going to have to recoat again after i ride it a little to cure this initial layer on... still really impressed for 5 bucks

Great thread.  Good job on pics!  :thumb:  I keep a rag on hand to put under the pump nozzle at the gas station so it doesn't drip on my cheap paint.  If I forget my rag I use my glove, figure it'll evaporate in 115 degree Houston Sahara heat.

Now if only i could get all that frame rust off that you see in the pictures :(

Somebody was talking about stove polish and posted pics that looked pretty darn good.  If I didn't already wire wheel my rusted header clean, I would try that stove polish stuff.
