I considered one before I purchased my Versys but decided against because of two recurring comments.  The first was that the power came on like a two stroke - it had a hit once it got up into the rpms.  The second was that the clutch had very little feel - it would engage abruptly.  However, based on Yamaha's description of "easy to control power" and "very linear throttle control" it sounds like they may have addressed those issues.

If it's similar to the Naked FZ6 I test rode, I wouldn't bother. Test ride write up http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=52805.msg619587#msg619587 (high revving engine)

Of course, different bikes for different folks. If you like it and it's comfy, then hook in.

:whisper: My mechanic doesn't trust Yamaha, reckons they make their bikes so the valves and other stuff starts malfunctioning after 10,000 miles. A distance most New Buyers will have already sold off the bike before experiencing problems. But this is just one mechanic's opinion. Oddly, this malady he talks about doesn't seem to effect Z750s & Z1000s - the only Yamaha he recommends (the essentially have the same engine). And I Much prefered riding the Z750s I rode, bar for the hard seat, and would go one of those over a Fazer any day of the week.

Naa, the FZ6R is a bike that Yamaha made for an entry bike into the sport bike category...check this link for a decent comparo

http://www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/2010-kawasaki-ninja-650-vs-2009-suzuki-gsx650f-vs-2010-yamaha-fz6r-89460.html

SAFE-T bought one for his wifey's second bike as a step up from the GS500...they are pretty happy with it, atleast they were last time I talked to him...

As for Yamaha valves being engineered to fail...they must have screwed up on mine, cause I rode straight through that barrier

I have a friend who has one, he seems to like it. It's a pretty good looking bike and sounds great for a stock exhaust. Definitely something worth considering if you're not looking for an R1/R6. He seems to keep up alright with other guys on normal 600cc sportbikes. Don't think he's had it long enough to experience any real problems with it though.

Let me rephrase... seeing as he mostly works on R1s etc.,  he sees a lot of failed bits. This led to a discussion on the FZ1 and FZ8 which lead to Z750 and Z1000 being ok and a better choice over FZ8 and he's suggestion I but a Speed Triple. Confused?

I think I follow...he's very scattered and brand biased (and obviously doesn't notice the burning bum issue), which lead you to disregard what he told you and bought a Honda 919 :icon_mrgreen:

Did I get it right??

kawasaki put $hitty material in the intake valves, they disappear into the head, common on ex500's and several bikes uing the ninja motor.
I've heard it doesn't happen with the 650 ninja/versys motor. They're supposed to have cleaned up their processes a lot, however I've seen the crap they left on the frame on some 650 ninja's and I guess I'll believe it when I see one split open after 10K miles.

You tryin' to stir crap up there Yama??  :flipoff:  :icon_twisted:

I was just sayin' that the Honda was the smarter choice, and maybe his mechanic friend has a biased opinion based on him suggesting a bike that MR did a review on a few months ago and stated that the seat was too hot due to the underseat exhaust...and I was being a little defensive of my new brand...atleast Yamaha had the smarts to put a fan under the seat of my bike to counter the exhaust heat... :thumb:

SAFE-T

The FZ6R is actually fairly similar to my '99VFR800. Same amount of vibes on the highway, a little on the heavy side, and good midrange. Rode it through the Icefields Parkway this summer ~ seat is not good enough for my bony arse, but everything else was good. Probably what I would buy myself if I had to replace my VFR, except you sometimes also find late-model VFR800's for a similar price.

Oh no I think I might agree with Buddha! The older FZ6's were pretty cool basically a detuned previous gen R6 mill with a standard seeting. They had Al frames. I think there was a fully faired version. One of the recent updates updates to the FZ6R reworked a bunch of stuff to make them cheaper and more diverged from the R6, if I remember correctly.

The FZ6R is the only Japanese bike I can think of where the "R" doesn't mean it is a performance model.
