New GS500, fuel issues (UPDATE: air in the petcock)

Hey guys.  I just got a GS500 as my first bike, a 92 GS500e with 7000 miles.  There's only one issue: the fuel petcock.

When I turn the bike to "on," it dies within about 30 seconds from fuel starvation.  Reserve works just fine.  There are no filters or kinks in the lines, and they are clear lines, so I can see that there's no blockage.  Any idea what's going on?  I'd rather not replace the stock petcock if I can avoid it...

Fill her up. Don't just look in the tank and think it's full, fill it up and know for sure.

If your tank is full and you still have the same issue, we'll move onto the next thing, fair enough? One thing at a time.

The first time it happened I thought it was out, so I switched to reserve and rode it to a station.  After filling up to the top, the on position still starved the bike.

Is there any easy way to verify if all the hoses are running to the right place?  I'm removing the tank to change the air filter soon so I might as well check.

UPDATE

I have identified the source of the fuel flow issues.  There appears to be a large air bubble in the reserve line from tank to petcock that will not flow into the engine, regardless of how long I run on reserve.  It simply stalls.  Is there a relatively easy way to bleed the petcock?

It could be possible that your fuel tank petcock is not open all the way, thus not letting the reserve line open up fully. I would check this first as it's only two bolts on either side of the gas tank. If not, you may need to clean the carbs.

Common problem. The internal vacuum diaphragm is causing your problem. It's cheaper to up grade than buy a stock replacement.
