North Carolina/Virginia license plate question

I recently moved to NC from Texas and I just bought a bike in Virginia.

In Texas your plates stay on the vehicle when you sell it but here when you buy a bike it has no license plate.

Is there some kind of pass or temporary tag you can get that allows you to ride/drive a vehicle home after you buy it?

In NC you are allowed 30 days from date of purchase to get it plated etc, and VA - irrelevant in this scenario. Just keep the title etc and get to the dmv in 30 days with ins etc.

You can ride it in that 30 days, just get it insured before you ride.

or the county courthouse usualyl has an office where you can obtain plates. BUT , be prepared to get pulled over alot riding sans plates though. BUT yes do what the crazy indian said

got it insured and had paperwork with me, went for a ride yesterday with no plates. 

I haven't had a bike since i got to NC 5 months ago and the roads are so much more fun here than in Texas.

Just got a deal on a 2009 R6, hopefully I can sell it before this winter.

It seems to me like cops tend to ignore crotch rockets with no plates , maybe because so many have their plates mounted where you can't see them anyway.

You Just got a bike and are looking to sell it in the next month or so already?

Yes, but I intend to make a decent profit from it.

My plan is to keep this up for awhile and I should be able to walk in and pay cash for a new S1000RR or something similarly awesome.

Good deals seem to be lacking in this area from what I have seen. I was on a roll in Texas especially in the DFW area there are tons of cheap bikes and they sell quickly.

I looked into it in Texas because I know of several giant "dealer only" auctions there.

The problem is the rules for getting approved make it purposely difficult for anyone without a full fledged dealership.

I'm currently looking at getting a NC dealers license, then maybe it will be worth it to make a trip back to Texas and buy 5 or 6 bikes at a time.

As long as the old tobacco barn on my property will qualify as my "showroom" and I don't run in to any zoning issues I think it might work.

zone it as a used bike dealership. ( or used moto/cars.)but you have to get the tags, and insurance on tags. most of hte lot tags are insured. policy coveres whatever its attached to. ive borrowed my friends from her lot to get vehicles to and from my home. ( and hte 1 repo from tulsa back to east tn. / other one from north little rock)for some odd reason, ive enjoyed being a repo man. odd thign was, i had picked up a monte carlo. from the guy who owed on it. and next day delivered a pizza to his home. and he still tipped me. lol. anyhoo back on topic, i know most places are difficult to get dealership mermits, BUT if you can get them, the auctions are awesome places to score bikes lol. ( if not, then make GOOD friends wiht a dealer and go along as their " driver" they can buy on your behalf

I believe a motorcycle dealers license is separate from a car dealers license. There are also 2 kinds of motorcycle dealers, wholesale or retail. Retail is what I need because wholesale only allows you to sell to other dealers and not to the public.

Where we are you can sell 8 cars/bikes a year without a license. Might pay to look into the rules where you are now to see if the number that can be sold without a dealer license will satisfy your needs.

I think it is 6 here but you are not allowed buy sell any vehicles for profit intentionally. Without a dealers license you are also supposed to pay tax on the vehicle before you sell it.

I really want access to some of the dealer auctions, I went to one once but wasn't allowed to bid. It was awesome there were hundreds of bikes of all kinds being sold at or well below trade-in value. I think I could make some decent additional income without the overhead of a dealership, employees etc..
