Moto is not idling at all

Hi.

I haven't ridden my bike in about 3 years. Yeah that's my fault but i had a kid and so on.

I was just trying to get it back into riding shape for the summer.

Put new gas in and with the choke open, it gets up to about 4K RPMs and also revs ok albeit with a bit of hesitation. When i close the choke, it promptly dies. Like it can't maintain the idling RPM.

I'm suspecting that my carb is just dirty and it probably needs to be cleaned.

Should i replace all the jets as well while doing this? Any recommendations on a kit or a 2000 GS500E?

Any other ideas as to why it might not be idling right? THere's no fuel leaking from the pee-pee hose.

thanks!

Was the bike sitting for 3 years with gas in the carbs?
If so, it probably gummed up and clogged the pilot jets.

When this happens I always first try to run some gummout or other fuel additive in the tank to try and clean it out without getting into the carbs. That only works maybe 25% of the time. You will most likely have to pull the carbs, and then clean or replace the pilot jet. While you are in there, you can clean the remainder of the carb if you like. Just don't get carb cleaner on any rubber parts.

The hardest part is getting the carbs on and off, so yeah if the cost isn't an issue you may want to replace all the o-rings, gaskets and jets all at once while you have the carbs off. Note that if you have never had the carbs apart before, they use JIS screw heads that strip easily. Once you manage to get them off, replace with allen head or some other easily removed stainless steel fasteners.

I've put sea foam in there and it's still much the same. I'm having trouble locating pilot jets to buy. I see this kit https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-NEW-SUZUKI-GS500E-89-2000-CARB-KITS-K-L-18-9310/232763430174?epid=171207112&hash=item3631c8151e:g:ebIAAOSwnDZT29ke

but it doesn't include pilot jets i don't think. Any recommendations on a kit?

Do you have a pic of this JIS screw? I think i put it back ok the last time but maybe i shouldn't take a chance and replace it this time with allen head screws.

thanks!
