Picked up this little gem last week to fullfill my commuter needs.  It's a 2001 GS 500 with under 15,000 miles on the clock.  Appears to be bone stock except for a lockable trunk that was included with the deal.  It has been sitting for a year with a full tank of gas.  P/O said he started it every month, however, he killed the battery trying to get it started last week.  It was not runnig when I looked at it, so I picked it up for a steal of a price.  I have pulled the carbs and manifolds and gave a thorough cleaning, but it appears that I may be battling an air leak now as evidenced by the high hanging idle.  I think the P/O might have popped a hole in the carb diaphram when he attempted to clean them.

History.  I grew up racing MX, had a few sportbikes over the years, then I got into supermoto a few years ago.  I currently have a 2008 Husqvarna 510 SMR (street legal), a 2002 Honda CR 250 2 smoker (MX and supermoto setup), and a 2001 Honda XR 50 (built :icon_mrgreen:), and now the GS 500.

Looks great man. You have to keep us up dated.
If you can feel the wind in your hair... you need to put a helmet on.

Ooh, the gs looks simple without all the CA Emissions equipment.

keep us updated bro!

Will do...just have to find the time to break her down again and soak the carbs this time rather than hand cleaning like I already did.  Going away this weekend to run the Husky on the track at Beaverun on Saturday.  Get around to the commuter bike next week.

Looks like it's also had the PAIR system removed, so it's more than just the CA emissions gear.

Or maybe it never had a PAIR system? I forget whether 2001 naked models included it.

My older bikes have the ports for the PARE system, but are internally blocked off. You probably never had it. If you look in the ports, they're blocked off inside.

If it had a PARE system and was removed, they would be blocked off with a plate bolted onto the ports from the outside.

Looking at parts lists, there is this "canister" thingy which on older bikes lists as "California only" and 1997 and onwards, has the tag "E33". That must be an emissions designation. Don't recall seeing it here in Washington.
