i removed exhaust to remove catilytic convertor and found the exhaust had a large weld at the head end of pipe,it was down to 1 1/4 " .I ground it away till it was matching the inside of main pipe which in this case was approxmatly 1 5/8"  After that i cut exhaust pipe where the catilytic converter was and drilled out witha drill till i cleared it all. After that i looked up the pipe towards the muffler and found a second catirlytic converter as seen in photo this i left as its area is about 4" across and has a depth of approx 2" i left this and welded the pipe back  together .the pipe sounds  great. i have previously changed the jetting and timing and will check mixture strength in near future. bike is no longer the slug it was when it was standard ..GS500 2009 M0DEL 12,500MILES

Before anyone jumps at removing their Cat, please check your jurisdiction abilities. I have received this from a police officer in my state...

"They have the instruments which detects your emissions, if the cat/emissions has been tampered with your bike will be immediately de-registered, number plate and rego sticker removed, and vehicle deemed unroadworthy. You then have to get someone to tow it back to your place and rectify the problem, get a new RWC before presenting the bike at QT for re-rego. The fine is $600.00 and 4 points. This initiative was proposed last year by the Bligh Government but rejected, a further study into it revealed that 1 in 3 motorcycles have aftermaket exhausts with the actual cat removed. A further study revealed that the possible revenue raised from such defect will top the $20 million mark, something Anna decided to go after. New measuring instruments are now part of an officer's ever-growing number of gadgets available. At the moment everyone is eager to use them so be aware if your bike has no cat converter. The consequences are $$ and could result in loss of bike if individuals offend 3 times."

You are right MISTER it does apply in some american states none of which i belong to.Iam simply bringing this info about the extra cat in our gs500 s to others attention ,it is just the same as if you have changed your jetting ,air cleaner. exhaust ,camshaft etc. it would be interesting if the final result was an improvement to this polution problem along with so called global warming.this started when man started claiming land from the sea  and daming up rivers for power generation.LONG LIVE THE MAN WHO DARES TO TRY THINGS.

One American state last I checked, California, and you probably shouldn't ever pick up a hobby involving a vehicle (or anything, really) because everything gives you cancer/kills children/causes world hunger over there.

...sounds a LOT like Australia the more I hear about it...

What clown comes up with laws like this? I never understood doing things for global warming and ozone preservation. Volcanos are more of a danger to the ozone than a few million vehicles. Don't tell anyone that though. They might start taxing more to build giant man hole covers for Volcanos.

I'd take it the police are the same over there as they are here. They have every tool available to them but an education and common sense.

First let me say, no place is like Australia. While we may have certain things not so good, at least we don't have CCTV by the millions (UK) or an aggressive tax department that wants to tax us even when we live in other countries, or an obsessive govt hell bent in removing every freedom you can think of in the name of a war on a feeling.

Anyways... yes the police have every tool available to them - but - they are also tasked with doing a job, common sense does not come into it.

Let me explain...

The speed limits are determined by the Dept of Transport. They hire, for lack of a better word, the police force to enforce their limits. The police do not set the limits but are hired to enforce them. Normal police will show discretion Unless you are exceeding the limit by 15kms and they are teaching a recruit or new probationary constable. Traffic branch, however, never lets you off otherwise it would contradict their reason for existing.

Yes, some cops have a power trip. Others do not. I've worked in several police stations and ride with some and can tell you, cops are normal people just doing a job. Your brief interaction with them might leave a bad taste in your mouth - but - they deal with the sh!t each and every day. So they tend to get a tainted picture of people.

Remember, they are just doing their job.

Also remember, all police are Officers. Officers exist in companies - CEO, CFO, etc. A policeman is an Officer - holding office in a company. The company is the relevant police force and branch. Look them up on dun & Bradstreet and you will find them. As officers of a company they have to follow company policy. Again, that is their Job.

Ummm yes we do. Just ask Paul Hogan, Jimmy Barnes (when he ran away to France) and numerous Oz sports stars. Also can't even fart now with out the Government wanting to tax it. Also NSW government new and previous whould have us cross our legs and sit on our hands all day because someone might do something that might offend some minority or might step on an ant and the Fed government and state government tax the crap out of us because they sold off all the countries assests and now have to get that revenue back from over taxing the people, can anyone say "Carbon tax" :thumb:

My K3 wouldn't have a cat would it? Not that I'm thinking of doing this just curiosity and yes I've heard what it did to the cat.
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Taxing is minor compared to the "9-11", "Homeland Security" and "anti-terrorism" excuses for everything.
There is a hidden rider in a bill going through congress that lets the government impose martial law. They will be able to detain anyone indefinitely for any reason they think you "might have ties to terrorism". And they won't have to tell you why or give you a lawyer. Can anyone say "Gestapo" or "SS"?
Then there are "fuel surcharges" that never go away. "Carbon taxes" and selling "carbon credits".
"ethanol" which costs more to make than the energy you get from it.
Promoting CFL lights which contain mercury and cost bundles to dispose if (if you do it the legal way).
Promoting natural gas because it "doesn't produce green house gases like oil" - yea, right - you're still making carbon dioxide from burning fuel.
Medicare gaps in prescription coverage "because seniors take too many medicines and this will reduce it if they have to pay for it".
Yea, we're a pretty screwed up country here.
I'm so glad Washington State doesn't give a rat's arse about emissions and stuff for motorcycles.

mister

Lukewarm, you are only taxed on foreign income IF you were a resident for tax purposes. If you are not a resident for tax purposes you will not be taxed by the aust govt on income earned overseas. The problem with hogan et al is they were resident for tax purposes and earned overseas income.

The us govt taxes its citizens even when they are not living in the country.

You may be taxed on as many things as the aussies but is the rate of tax as high?

40%?

Also: On topic, how much airflow restriction through the headers does the cat restrict?

I don't have the numbers, but it restricts enough that my bike responds completely differently with it off.

YMMV however. There was a lot wrong with my bike I fixed just this last week and any one of those things (or a combination of them) could make my bike more responsive.

cats were fitted to gs500 in2004 ,if you want to check if you have one just see if you have a couple of weld dimples about 2 to 3" inches up towards muffler after where the two into one section of pipe  meets the larger section  .Im proud to be a Kiwi  and not a AUSSIE     .this is the weld dimples look like on a gs

Dude, just don't say that without explaining why. So, how is your Australia different to what I've described in this thread?

Or yeh, telly cameras everywhere. Give ya a bit of an example. Had the ol pekker out, having a jimmy riddle up against Davo's garage wall last Saturday arvo after the RSL smoko, looked up as I bashed it dry, and there was a ruddy camera leering at me. Gobsmacked, I was...me mate said not to worry tho cos it might have been some good-looking copper chick watching on the monitor up at the station. Do you have stats before and after to show any performance gains?
Common sense in not very common.
