So i was just wondering if anybody here has ever tried putting this (or anything similar to it) on their gs.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrome-Motorcycle-Exhaust-Muffler-Shorty-12-Universal-/170688809902?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item27bdd88bae#ht_2102wt_1163

If so, how does it sound? or any thoughts?

thinking of cheap fixes, because my stock one is dented and scratched up pretty bad.

Unless the can is badly damaged (bent in half, missing) I wouldn't go this route.

Get a can of BBQ paint and respray it. It will look worlds better and the flat paint hides dents. $5 fix.

Pinwall on ebay usually has nice complete OEM muffler systems for like $89 and $35 shipping. I got one for Phenix - hardly a scratch on it.

Here's one. Search their store for more GS500 parts.

I was thinking about getting one of those universal mufflers. I wanted something to make it sound less like a lawn mower, but I didn't want to buy one and have it sound like crap... xunedeinx has debaffled HD sportster exhaust that sounds pretty good, you can pick up stock HD pipes pretty cheap... I ended up with a carbon fiber D&D slip on from a cbr or something. I still need to have a muffler shop make a custom mid pipe for it though.

Thanks for the reply guys, i was just looking for a cheap fix and was weighing my options.

i have thought about sanding the whole chrome plate and painting it to help hide the imperfections.

The shorty pipe was so tempting tho, $26+shippping...!

Actually no this is what is in the post. Close tho!

Exactly the same pipes. I was looking to get them to have sorta retro sound. Kinda like the old school twins! :)

J_Walker

One should work... Idk tho. Gotta ask Buddha about the jetting and whatnot.

Erm...I hope both you crazy cats realize the GS650 is a four? Your GS won't sound anything like this. And even with the twin pipes it won't sound like an old twin (such as a Triumph or Norton) as they have different cranks (360 vs 180 irc) which totally changes the exhaust note.

I'd be interested to see how the chrome on that $26 pipe holds up to rust and corrosion. I'm betting not well at all.

My bike's been missing the chrome overlay since I got it. If just the chrome is damaged / an eyesore, consider removing it and just leaving the black pipe underneath. Or, buy a used stock unit on Ebay.

Trying to figure out an exhaust myself.  This looks something like I was hoping for.  Hmmmmmmmmmm,....(edit) Went ahead and got one coming, will spray some high heat black over that chrome.  If it doesn't work I'll hang it on the wall next to my gs exhaust for more decoration.

Oooh we have a guinea pig. Let us know how it goes

I have a pipe from an 06 GSXR 600 on mine.  It's lighter and sounds better.  I did rejet so it runs better also.

keep an eye out on the interwebs for a real motorcycle muffler, something carbon / titanium,

if you are from a place with a large craiglsist environment finding one can be cheap and easy, i picked up a titanium akrapovic slip on for an R1 for 50 bucks, and then paid a wopping 30 at the muffler shop, and some teamwork with the man, putting it on my gs. The product was a great sounding bike with quite a lot of muffling even for a glass pack muffler. I ended up chopping 4" off the can and it sounds even better.

Just one example in im sure a multitude.

But the main point is: its a bike, its outside, the muffler is both a functional and artistic aspect of the design, and must be looked at, so dont buy cheap materials that cant take the environmental impact of being on a bike. Most of all, spend a lot of time fitting to make it look good.
