I cannot for the life of me find NYS laws about reflectors, I'm pretty sure PO took them all off *I'll have to go check*
I'm not saying this is the end all be all but I cannot find anything saying they're required. I would like to add some though, especially reflective tape on wheels.
Anyone from NY and have inspection info?
Thanks,
Ian

Edit: Looks like I have to have a red reflector

NY is easy, used to live there and studied CJ there...

If it comes on the vehicle stock as a piece of safety equipment or if its emissions related, its required.

Not in NY but the bike shops around here sell adhesive backed reflectors that satisfy MD inspection requirements if the OEM are missing.

Sorry - I seemed to have hijacked your thread.....

adidasguy to the rescue: Try this:

http://troopers.ny.gov/publications/traffic_safety/Required_Motorcycle_Equipment.cfm

Seems only a rear reflector is required in NY. Seems to deviate from DOT requirements for new motorcycles sold in the USA. So if you buy a new one, they will have reflectors but you can remove them.

    Reflector**

One red reflector must be displayed to the rear of the vehicle (may be a part of the tail lamp).

    License Plate Lamp**

The plate must be lit with a white light bright enough to make the plate visible from 50 feet.

Here's another resource, though reflectors not mentioned:
http://www.msf-usa.org/downloads/Equipment_Chart_2010.pdf

DOT publication
http://www.dot.nd.gov/divisions/mv/docs/MVD18.pdf

And yet I find another one:
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/maninfo/mcpkg002.pdf

Eventually I found this - but haven't read it yet
http://cfr.vlex.com/vid/571-108-lamps-reflective-associated-19948537

maybe reflectors are more of a Washington state requirement?

Hope this helps everyone!

These links belong in the WIKI.

And way down I found this table: I left just motorcycle requirements. I knew I read it somewhere! Sorry it is not formatted very well. It is in the http://cfr.vlex.com/vid/571-108-lamps-reflective-associated-19948537

Table III?Required Motor Vehicle Lighting Equipment[All Passenger Cars and Motorcycles, and Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles, Trucks, Buses and Trailers of Less Than 80 (2032) Inches (mm) Overall Width]
Item   Passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses   Trailers   Motorcycles   Applicable SAE standard or recommended practice (See S5 for subreferenced SAE materials)

Reflex reflectors    2 amber   3 red;

Table IV?Location of Required Equipment[All Passenger Cars and Motorcycles

Reflex reflectors   On the rear?1 red on each side of the vertical centerline, at the same height, and as far apart as practicable    On the rear?1 red on the vertical centerline except that, if two are used on the rear, they shall be symmetrically disposed about the vertical centerline   Not less than 15 inches, nor more than 60 inches.

On each side?1 red as far to the rear as practicable, and 1 amber as far to the front as practicable    On each side?1 red as far to the rear as practicable, and 1 amber as far to the front as practicable

No one knows the origin of this Washington law - talk about goofy!
RCW 46.37.5185
Street rod and custom vehicles — Blue dot taillights.

A street rod or custom vehicle may use blue dot taillights for stop lamps, rear turning indicator lamps, rear hazard lamps, and rear reflectors. For the purposes of this section, "blue dot taillight" means a red lamp installed in the rear of a motor vehicle containing a blue or purple insert that is not more than one inch in diameter.
